I shared that “teaching is harder than being in the military!” article with Kourtney and oooooh she has thoughts.

Her main sticking point has always been: in the military, if there’s someone acting up or not following directions, they don’t last. In fact, they CAN’T last.

1/
Military thrives off of structure, and there’s often an element of control that you have within your role and community. She has seen SO many people get kicked out. In her words: “in the military, you don’t really have to deal with riff-raff because they kick them out.”

Entitlement is out in FULL FORCE this morning!

I was asked to watch the son of someone who is “a friend of a friend.” I barely know her, and also I have a paid speaking engagement that day.

She demanded that I cancel my paid speaking engagement to watch her son for the DAY.

1/
The conversation went a little something like this:

Her: “You need to cancel your gig. Keynoting isn’t a big deal.”

🥴

Me: “That…that’s not how this works. As someone who does professional speaking, I’ve had this arrangement booked for months. Also, I barely know you.”

So am I reading this correctly that *checks notes* there will be a “Real Housewives of New York: Legacy” starring most of the original cast and then a NEW “Real Housewives of New York” starring a brand new cast?

What is this? Why? What is the purpose of this? This reminds me of the time I had friends over for brunch not long ago and every single one requested I make a different dish.

“Victoria’s brunch: omelette only edition!”

“Victoria’s brunch: carb edition!”

“Victoria’s brunch: vegan and fair trade edition!”

It was exhausting.

I had a conversation moments ago with my director about how there’s going to be a huge reckoning of educators who won’t be coming back to their buildings after break.

She said: “well, there are tons of openings at schools!”

I said: “no, I mean, they’re LEAVING leaving.”

1/
Then I said: “they don’t want to be in a school. They will be looking for other employment or quitting with nothing lined up.”

I told her about the sheer number of educators that have reached out to me to find more about my job/my consult work.

And then I see THIS tweet.

I saw a tweet yesterday inquiring as to why more tech coaches and “eduinfluencers” aren’t pushing for remote instruction in their districts.

As someone who proudly embraces the first and begrudgingly acknowledges that I am one of the second, let’s chat.

1/
Really, this all boils down to folks severely misunderstanding the role of the tech coach/instructional coach.

First, my job is not to influence district administration. My job is to work with teachers so they get better at their craft, and inform school administration to…

A la @MrTomRad, I have found myself in a situation where I am also listening to someone speaking to somebody else in my favorite airport lounge.

This woman was dumped in PORTLAND, OREGON!!!! And now she is going to go confront him in Spokane. She has a job interview coming up! She is excited!

But most importantly, she wants this man to get his comeuppance for leaving her stranded in Portland, Oregon!

Alright, it's time to pop off. @TechySewell and I were JUST talking about this topic.

EVERY tech company says this. "We've achieved pay equity! If you have any questions or concerns, come to us!"

You know what happens when you come with the concerns? You get the axe.

1/ If you don't get the axe for ruffling feathers or questioning pay hierarchies, you'll be lucky to get invited to speak about how you view pay the pay structure to be inequitable.

When you bring up your credentials and what you bring to the team, then YOU get questioned.

Y’all wanted corporate secrets that can be put into the classroom, so now I’m here to give you those secrets.

None of these contain classified information.

And I know I was supposed to do this a little while ago but, you know, life.

Let’s start with collaboration briefs.

1/
Not too long ago I mentioned collaboration briefs (see below). Usually curated by the marketing or business strategy department, they essentially catch key components of someone’s personality or work style so that you can form a connection with them.

During my #ISTELive session today on Being Anti-Racist in Tech, there was someone that mentioned they do not think that Katherine Johnson (from Hidden Figures and literally helped to put us on the moon) and Isaac Newton are on the same level.

I've got time, so let's discuss.

1/
I'd like to begin by asking you *how* many of you knew about Katherine Johnson before Hidden Figures came out.

Being a Black woman myself and having parents who are *very* pro-Black, I didn't even know until I saw the movie, and I'd wager many of you are in the same place.

This heat wave is messing with my ability to do pretty much anything so here’s a rambling thread of useless facts I know.

1.) After The Lion King was released, the Disney company was sued by a hyena biologist claiming that the movie painted hyenas in a negative light.

1/
2.) Richard Gere’s middle name is Tiffany.

3.) The opposite sides of a die will always add up to seven (and this makes for some GREAT math challenges).

4.) The plastic thingies on the end of shoelaces are called aglets.

I've got a free minute and I got several questions regarding my implementation of @iste standards at my school. This has literally been MONTHS of progress and since I've received inquiries, I want to share!

To begin, here is the document I created: docs.google.com/document/d/1L2…

1/
Leadership wanted to implement ISTE wasn't exactly sure where to begin, so I created this plan.

First, you'll notice that not all standards are being implemented at once. Because, honestly, that's a LOT to take on. We are focusing on three standards per three cohorts.

I think it’s time to talk about what I refer to as an “equity bully.”

An “equity bully” is someone who presents themselves as someone who promotes equity, but once you get to know them they are *actually* promoting their own inequitable and bizarre agenda(s).

1/
I’ll begin by saying equity is not something we should have to promote at all. It’s something we should embody. It’s something we should all be working toward.

However, that doesn’t happen for some folks and instead they constantly bring equity up in an inauthentic way.

Since this got some attention yesterday, here’s what happened (this will be a thread).

The man was trying to backtrack on this statement. She kept pressing on what exactly he meant when he said he hates working with females, and what the “like you” piece at the end meant. 1/ It’s important to note that my wife is one of the ONLY Black women in her very white male dominated circles.

After his backtracking, she said: “You’re not giving me the truth. You’re giving me nonsense. I need the truth. Give me the truth. You are being dishonest with me.” 2/

Hey @educationweek:

I’m curious as to what the rationale is for hiring this person to write an op ed for your website. Not only is she openly attacking a fellow educator, but calling social justice “crap” is alarming alongside your Black voices statements.

Thoughts/comments? Oh, we are absolutely about to have some paired texts. I’ve GOT time and I hope I make you proud, @JennBinis. And also @jennthetutor because you have perfected the art of the drag.

Let’s start here: if I go on @educationweek’s Twitter account, I find this.
