OR the fact that should we actually do that little biological trick you seem to think is the only thing that defines us by GETTING PREGNANT, we have to worry about EVERYTHING that intrinsically requires of us which it DOES NOT require of the man that got us there, including and WAY beyond PARTICIPATING AT ALL...

It’s certainly not the one I would’ve picked, if I was trying to look flattering.
In fact… it’s never been seen by anyone. I haven’t even had the heart to look at it, myself, in all the years since I took it.

Trauma does interesting things to the brain. This wasn’t the first or only time a man laid hands on me… but it was the first time I was knocked to the ground.
I’m not a slight Woman, I’m pretty sturdy, tall and strong.

So many details are… fuzzy… but the memory of me falling, and spinning through the air as I fell… it’s so clear, it’s almost like slow motion.

I was so surprised.
He had barely moved. It was like… swatting a fly. He didn’t even have to think about it.

And as strong, independent, and formidable I am as a Woman… it made no difference. Not one of the things which make me someone who people tend to consider to be powerful mattered, in that moment. None of my strengths counted.

I felt so… small.
🧵 I don’t remember the blow itself hurting, even though it did. But, the feeling of futility was like a piano crashing on my head.

Look, I’m not sharing this to play victim or garner sympathy. I handled this, and I healed. It was work, but I did it and I’m alright now.

I’m sharing this to bring attention to what I see as a vital point that I feel needs to be emphasized more in our current conversations.

People are talking about “womanface” and, I feel like it’s being done with the focus on pointing out how much someone does or doesn’t pass, or to illustrate the reductionist and offensive tropes we often see men employing in their imitations… and, that’s all worth noting. For sure.

But, it’s not the most important part.

Just like how the most important part of the bathroom issue isn’t about privacy, or self consciousness, or psychological and emotional comfort… and the most important part about language isn’t about us feeling territorial, or exclusive, or not compassionate towards other people’s internal hardships or our beliefs of them.

The most important part is that these things, all of them, dissolve the reality of womanhood, and thus weakens the protections we have fought for, and won. Not for the sake of our egos, or our status, or our “gender identity.”
But for the SAFETY of women and girls.

For the sake of the fact that we are women.

And, we are strong, and unique, and powerful, and beautiful, and even a little bit magical… but…

All that lives inside these bodies. And these bodies, they are very special. Like many special things, they are also fragile.

Over my years of supporting Trans Widows, I have heard these devastating stories all too many times. This young woman in Japan touches on many experiences of trauma, sexual, emotional and psychological abuse, gaslighting, and grief that trans widows so often share.
