We may get a new Prime Minister today. But how, I hear you ask, can @RishiSunak unite the Conservatives and reverse a 36-point deficit by 2024?

With exquisite timing, @jim_blagden and I have a big report out today for @ukonward, based on a 10k @JLPartnersPolls poll. Thread: 1/14 2/14 First things first, how bad is the position he could inherit? Short answer: Very bad.

Excluding the 1992-97 Parliament, the Conservatives are trailing Labour by more than any governing party has trailed the Opposition since the early 1980s. We know how 1992-97 ended.

Really notable that - while Boris/Rishi are statistically tied on winning elections, public services and levelling up - on the key question of stabilising the economy, Rishi Sunak is *27 points* ahead. Reinforced by other pollsters in recent days. YouGov (22 October) - Who would you most trust to manage the British economy?

Rishi: All voters: 32%, Con 19: 40%

Boris: All voters: 12%, Con 19: 23%

Penny: All voters: 3%, Con 19: 4%
