I had the honor to be an #IronViz judge. I entered for years and never placed. I definitely learned and each #IronViz piece still has use for various reasons.

Here's some lessons I learned or further affirmed. #IronViz takeaways - both for your work dashboards and play:

Set the tone. This piece from @pradeep_zen nails a consistent aesthetic. The image reinforces the topic. The colors are minimal and SHAPE drives this viz more than color (more on this later).

Some lessons I've learned over the years. Many of these owe a debt to @VizCandy.

1. Kindness over chaos. When the house is on fire, we remember the person who was calm and kind and got people out. Be the calm.

2. Give it a think. It's way too easy to give yourself a pass. 3. Apologize properly. Own where you screw up and seriously work to not repeat it.

4. Reset the taboo every day: don't take people for granted just because you can. Make that taboo and keep it that way.

5. Ride the swings. We're too serious as grown ups. Swing. Laugh. Repeat.
