I see a lot of questions after disasters along the lines of “what can we do as meteorologists to make people take action?” Valid question. And we should always strive to improve our comms and to empower people to take action. However, our comms are just a small piece (1/x) of the complex problem that is risk comms and people taking action. I cannot change human nature. I cannot provide the means for everyone to evacuate or take action. My role and ability to do so is limited. It takes a whole system of people working in tandem (2/x)

Dear chasers (especially if you have a large following): Please do not call an event a bust before it’s over. Especially when nighttime tornadoes were forecast the entire event. People follow you and listen to you. Just because you didn’t get your daytime tornado… doesn’t meet the event is a bust or that the event is over. When you call it a bust, you give the impression nothing is going to happen, it’s over, etc. I don’t know how many times yesterday I had to tell people please wait, it’s not over yet. Please keep paying attention.

I have seen a troubling amount of misinformation about the eastern Canadian wildfires. There Is no conspiracy. They were started by lightning. Why do you see smoke plumes take off all at the same time? Hot, dry, windy conditions w/ some atmospheric instability. Image Comparing the morning vertical temperature profile to the afternoon, you can see what is happening in the atmosphere. Daytime heating leads to steep lapse rates, which allows for rising air parcels. The smoke plumes become visible as they grow vertically in the atmosphere.

This is important. In many areas, wildfires are left to burn and “do their thing.” Fire is natural and serves a purpose in the health of boreal ecosystems. Part of the problem in the US especially is humans are encroaching on wild lands more and more. So prevention is used…1/x More and more to mitigate loss to human infrastructure. What does this mean? The natural process and purpose of wildfires is thrown off balance. This can lead to fuel loading and ultimately make fires worse, spread faster, etc. Where fires can be left to burn without…2/x

🧵: "How do you create the SPC Convective Outlook?" I get asked this question a lot. So, I'm going to touch on a little bit of the process. This is not all-inclusive, but should give a better idea of what goes into creating an outlook that looks like this: Image SPC uses an interface called N-AWIPS & NMAP to view all of our data (model, observations, soundings, etc). We use tools within this software to create our products (watches, convective/fire outlooks, MCDs, etc). What you see on the web is based on what we draw in NMAP. Image
