The argument that fracking will reduce our reliance on Russian gas is wrong. Between just 1 & 3% of UK gas comes from Russia. We import mostly from Norway - a friend and ally. /1
And to replace half the gas we import, we'd likely need around 6,000 new wells, with all the associated industrial equipment & endless movements of trucks ferrying toxic chemicals & wastewater to & from sites. It's hard to imagine communities across the UK being ok with that. /2

1/ Thread:
In all the gossip surrounding events in N10, the most striking (and depressing) thing is how many commentators think stopping the desecration of this, the only planet we inhabit - is ‘wokery’.
Some of them mistakenly believe they are conservative.
God help us.
2/ Was Theodore Roosevelt ‘woke’? He used exec orders to establish 150m acres of protected land said & said: “Here in the US we turn our rivers and streams into sewers and dumping-grounds, we pollute the air, we destroy forests and exterminate fishes, birds and mammals.”

THREAD: It’s easy to make sweeping claims that Govt ‘isn’t doing anything’, but it’s not true. Given the scale of the crisis, it’s is true that govts aren't doing enough (no one disputes that), but we are ramping up our ambition & the UK is objectively a world leader. EG:
In the only major intervention at last years UNGA, the PM committed to doubling our international climate finance to 11.6bn. He added that a major part of that uplift would be invested in restoring and protecting nature.

A few years ago I would not have thought this possible – a march of this sort on the streets of London backed by the Leader of the Opposition and numerous labour front benchers. It is blood chilling. We are heading to a very dark place.

Speakers were applauded as they declared Jewish organisations are “in the gutter” and “part of the problem”.
There were Nazi swastikas, slogans calling for the complete eradication of Israel. And the applause reached a crescendo as Corbyn’s message was read out.

Today Chris Chope MP will once again use arcane procedure to block a Bill that would amend the 1989 Children Act to include FGM on the list of things (like forced marriage or domestic violence) for which the courts can issue protection orders if they think a child is at risk. 1/5
The Bill has been scrutinised fully in the Lords, and is supported now by Government.
Chope has been begged not to block it by FGM campaigners. 2/5
