Thread on Zionism and Diaspora Negation
Zionism need not be understood as negating the Diaspora. We can understand it instead as the negation of a social pathology that had afflicted many Diaspora Jews. In this sense, Zionism does not eradicate the Diaspora - it empowers it. 1/7
For thousands of years, Jews in the Diaspora often led an arbitrary existence, surviving by the mercurial whims of their neighbors & persecutors. They were objects - not subjects - of history. We Jews were defined more negatively than most other identity groups in history. 2/7

Tuesday's #SafetyinSolidarity interfaith rally featured at a number of anti-Zionist speakers. A police officer asked ppl if they were Zionists as a barrier was erected to separate the rally from protestors. One officer told me, "Zionists on the other side of the barrier."
The officer also asked someone holding an Israeli flag to move to the other side of the barrier. Some clearly came to counter-protest Linda Sarsour and JVP, so the separation is understandable. But they also removed Zionists and ppl w/ Israeli flags who did not disrupt the event.
