There’s so much diminishing returns to this stuff it’s not even funny. 400 years ago you could do this and discover Neptune or cellular life

Today you can do it and figure out a condition wherein SSRIs cause 3% less weight gain or an antenna with 5% better fidelity or something Even just like 100 years ago you could become a preeminent expert in a given field like chemistry with a leisurely summer of reading whereas today with that same effort you might become a passable expert in some niche sub discipline like CRISPR-Cas9 applications in agriculture
