This year, the UK government will decide whether to permit a 20% blend of hydrogen into the gas grid.
Today, @e3g has published a new paper by @Vili_Ivanova1 & myself, setting out the case against this decision..🧵👇❎ e3g.org/publications/t…1. Blending has been proposed as a "sink” for excess h2 supply, providing a short-term route to market for producers to remove early commercial risks.
In anticipation of anti-regulation narratives on energy efficiency standards for private renters, some reminders:
1⃣ First, the proposal isn't new. Plans to tighten regs to EPC C are 2 yrs old. 2028 is a slip-back from 2026 originally proposed. Landlords have had time to prepare!
2⃣ Proposed measures will save renters £570 a year, with aggregate savings of £1.75bn. Those in private rented accommodation are highly vulnerable to rising energy costs, with at least 1 in 4 living in fuel poverty e3g.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/upl…

Today's U-turn on universal energy bill support means gov must urgently turn attention to measures to prevent a fuel poverty emergency from April.
@E3G & many others have pushed for action on this since last year. Here's a reminder of what's needed🧵 e3g.org/publications/t…1. First, of course, this means providing the right scope & scale of financial support for households who can't afford ~£5,000 energy bills.
A targeted approach sounds good in theory, but as @danielrportis points out, this is no easy job
As anticipated, the Energy Security Strategy fails to meet the moment – with next to nothing to alleviate soaring bills for UK families this year & missing an opportunity to invest in ‘no regret’ energy saving measures that could wiped-out Russian imports bbc.co.uk/news/business-…
Instead of supercharging energy efficiency & heat pump schemes + other demand side measures (like below), the Strategy is focused on long-term “fixes” like pricey nuclear, doing little to get off volatile international gas markers in the short-term e3g.org/publications/t…
