I was at the Aero show a couple of days ago in Bangalore. Broader observations / insights from the show. A thread (1/n): Most bigger players were saying the aerospace OEMs have a conscious strategy to move away from China..they have seen PPT slides and orders to that effect from those OEMs. (2/n)

We shifted houses recently and I had a chance to sort out books acquired over the past 10-12 years. As a showoff of sorts, here's a short thread on some of the books I read through in the last 10-12 years. 1/n Books which completely changed how I thought about certain things in life...rather..many things in life. These are, what I mark as 'wisdom' books which taught me how to think. 2/n

An update on this:

So, chemical and pharma capex announced so far for FY22:
SRF - 1200 cr
Divis - 1000 cr
Guj Fluoro - 1000 cr
Atul - 1200 cr
Aarti - 1000 cr
Laurus - 1200 cr
PI Industries - 600 cr
Deepak Nitrite - 500 cr
Vinati, Hikal, Rallis etc. - 150-200 cr each

China + 1? About 9000 cr capex just in FY22 from all these players (anecdotally). Couldn't find exact quantum for UPL. And this doesn't include capex for all the other small/medium/unlisted or commodity chemical players (including Meghmani's chlor-alkali).

Incredible quantum.

There has been a lot written on SBI cards performance and cards industry in India in general on multiple articles and threads. So, why not add to the noise even though the IPO might be 3-6 months away. So, here a few interesting nuggets (from the DRHP) which I have not seen (1/n) "Effective from April 1, 2018, SBIBPMSL, amalgamated into our Company. Our Restated Financial Statements for Fiscal 2018 have been restated as if that merger had occurred on December 15, 2017". SBIBPMSL was providing back end payment processing and services to SBI Cards. (2/n)

A bit contrary. First things first, I don't think this will spur more CapEx from the big firms. CapEx is done based on demand and not on extra money in the bank. But my grouse is different. This will make the big, even bigger. The US model. There was an absolute need to encourage relatively smaller firms (firms say less than 1000 cr or even 5000 cr) to get this tax break. Giving tax breaks to HDFC bank, Asian Paints, Bajaj Finance...I mean, HDFC bank will save 3000 cr in taxes, which re-invested will make HDFC Bank.

Thread for some interesting analysis and possible insights. A very wise friend sent me an email today titled '3x in 5 years'. This was basically a compilation of stocks by various folks from a (very good) Whatsapp group 3 years ago. 14-Oct-2015 to be exact. And he said, derive. Of course, Whatsapp group recommendations are a bhandaar of biases, self-promotions, tukkas, no relation between recco and own positions etc. and/or combination of many of these. Accounting for this skewness, and also accounting for flaws in comparing stock prices point-to-point

My Chess travails in Singapore tweetstorm follows. Please skip over if you are not interested. So, last time if you remember, I was quite glad with my online chess rating of 1700 and was getting to a feel of I understand this game. And then, I got pummeled..absolutely pummeled by a 9 year old..who I realized was representing Singapore...obviously, I rationalized happily.
