How do you manage your diesel & power costs in across your branch network in Nigeria?

Luckily the Telco and Oil industry have the answer for you.

Monitor everything, share the data with the responsible parties and swiftly sanction the guilty.

Contract design is important /1 Monitor everything!

I'm a great fan of Technoton and this case study shows how you can monitor the diesel your supplier delivers to your branch.

No more short deliveries or over invoicing /2

This stunning table basically says all the mobile and internet apps of the top 10 banks in Nigeria are 💩

Which is incredible and explains why Kuda has more users than GTBank.

It also explains the high valuations of fintecs because VC’s believe legacy banks can never catch up.. ImageImage The report is here and is filled with insights telling you what users want like

•The ability to chat with support within the app
•The ability to log and or resolve POS & dispense errors
•Reliability

Do this and win

The “new” PSBs (Payment Services Banks) represent an existential risk for any Nigerian bank that either depends on “cheap” retail deposits or transaction charges from payments.

This Christmas is likely going to be critical as your customers are going to be exposed to offers… /1 “So what?” I hear you shout!

“Why is Christmas special”

That is the time Nigerian banking shows it’s unique nature with service challenges, a total disregard for customer issues and complaining aggrieved customers are all over social media.

They will be ultra receptive /2

Three things fintecs and challenger banks need

· ATMs
· POSs
· Cards

You can't depend on the incumbents to provide these services for you.

You have to build it yourself. ATMs have an ill deserved reputation for cost. This is due to uniquely Nigerian issues such as corruption and incompetence.

Corruption where kickbacks and bribes inflate the cost

Incompetence where opex balloons because of a lack of skill.

I am doing some thinking around elections. I am wondering why lay people believe that it is possible to hold secure elections online.

This belief is widespread.

This thread by Prof @mattblaze explains why.

I should also ask @TexTheLaw regarding the forthcoming NBA elections. Does it matter if the NBA knows who you voted for in the election?

Guess what by virtue of it being online, no secret ballot.

Work from home (WFH) can be incredibly tiring in Naija with dodgy internet connections, terrible audio "Moji, mute your mike" and video so bad, that even that scratched VCD does better.

I will share some tips to improve your experience in this thread /1 The first and most frequent problem is poor internet. You may be unlucky to live in an area where you don't have a fiber connection (your best bet for performance) and the service providers around your area have bad service.

A quick fix is to combine multiple connections /2

Interesting display I saw in the shops, yesterday. Touting the energy efficiency of an AC.

I find that many do not know the significant impact setting the right temperature has on energy consumption and diesel costs.

Setting the AC temp to 25C instead of 16 saves huge $$$ /1 Imagine you run a business and have 15 ACs, setting the thermostat to 25, immediately saves you 5 liters of diesel an hour. Over the course of 12 hours, that is 13K NGN a day that you have saved by simply changing the temp.

The ACs consuming 2KWh at 16C & 0.6KWh at 25C /2

Let us talk about ATMs and the “profitability” shibboleth.

We say they are not profitable because we have not looked hard at our costs and also likely revenues.

The first question I would ask is what would people pay for access to cash @LordVino @LordVino This is in Lagos, a place called Kaiyetoro. It is on the way to Eleko beach. The nearest ATM is at Igando some 10 to 15KM away

They have this though. This is also why @oviosu goes around with such a huge smile on his face while spending time on the Ferrari configurator
