W3C’s web site vendor (Studio24) dropped WordPress from consideration:
w3c.studio24.net/updates/weekno…

WPTavern took issue with it:
wptavern.com/w3c-drops-word…

Studio24 points to Gutenberg:
w3c.studio24.net/updates/on-not…

I have some thoughts… [1/7] [2/7]

WPTavern argues for OSS first to shame, though WP as a whole is not completely OSS (Slack over IRC / MatterMost?).

More importantly, Automattic drove Gutenberg as a business decision, not community decision — Wix / etc. as revenue threats, Automattic assignees as proof.

A few people shared with me the Duet Date Picker because it asserts it is a “WCAG 2.1 compliant date picker”.

I don’t think it is, but I did not have to go too far to find out that, regardless of that claim, its accessibility is…. questionable.

[ Bob empties a truckload of random trash, plus bunches of lumber and cases of duct tape at a build site with architect waiting. ]

Bob: “There, I built it.”

Alice: “That is just… trash?”

Bob: “Ok. Tell me exactly what I need to do to fix it.”

Alice: “Hire builders.” Bob: “I don’t have the budget for builders. I’ll do it myself.”

[ Bob grabs a 2Ă—4, holds it up. ]

Bob: “Ok, where do I put this?”

Alice: “Seriously, hire builders. You cannot do this. It won’t be to code. Or stand up.”

Bob: “No budget. What do I do with the duct tape?”

You may recall my ongoing frustration with iOS and <dl>s:

Well, iOS 14 brings some good news!

A standard, unstyled <dl> is now exposed to VoiceOver users as they swipe through a page.

Note the qualifiers I added there. If you add list styles, iOS’s ongoing refusal to convey lists properly once you style them rears its head here.

Using display: list-item or list-style-type: disc shows CSS still affects semantics for VO in iOS 14 (and presumably iPadOS 14, though I did not update).

After 24 hours with the Surface Duo I can say that I like the hardware feel and form factor (even if taking screen shots is a pain).

Also really like side-by-side apps (which you can already do on Android), though not yet a fan of the overall Microsoft UI. More time needed. Screen shot with Twitter on... Two images with the Surface Duo in portrait mode. That word “Renraku” is my wallpaper peeking out through the gap between screens. IRL I just see bezel.

Sounds like if you can get enough plasma from recovered people (unknown amount of antibodies in samples), and if you get it to infected people in 3 days, 3-4 more out of 100 should survive. Overall, it seems good. But I worry about unintended consequences:

• Reduction in testing plasma for other disease;
• Reduction in scalable, long-term solutions;
• People mistaking it for a cure;
• Restraining & exsanguinating COVID survivors in our coming vampiric reality. Abstract. Importance: Passi...Key Points. Question. Does ...

Yesterday I read “Ararat” (1983) by D.M. Thomas. It took forever to track down all four books in the series. After this one, I won’t read the others.

Today I read “Software” (1982) by Rudy Rucker. I am already trying to secure the other two from the series (I have one other). For tomorrow I am debating between starting “The Demolished Man” (1951) by Alfred Bester (I enjoyed “The Stars My Destination” by him) or “Ancillary Justice” (2013) by Anne Leckie (wary of committing to a trilogy).

I also have six more books coming.

#accessiBe is spoofing automated checkers to try to game the scores of sites where it is installed.

As a result, it makes the experience worse, increases page load for users, and lies to testers.

Lack of response to my request for an accessible PDF makes me feel the Google Access effort here was performative only.
You know who cares about your annual report? Not as many as you think. An accessible PDF is fine for that.

You know who cares about your lessons learned from building an accessible support team? Probably a lot of people, including those better served by PLAIN HTML.

If you are not prepared to use your tweet as the transcript of your audio clip, then do not do it.

And shame on @TwitterA11y for not getting ahead of this and insisting there be some form of captioning. If you are not prepared to use your tweet as the transcript of your audio clip, then do not do it.

Sweet.

Bummer.

Accessibility should be built in from the start. MVPs become betas become products. Far easier to build it right than tear it down and start over. When making excuses for no a11y, replace the word with “security”. Challenge the same way. Priorities become clear (or lack of rigor).

One thing I have never been shy saying is that the food at @ChefsBuffalo is shit (check my Tweet history).

Now I understand why — the only seasoning they use (besides cheese) is the sour taint of their rotten principles.
