Thinking aloud:

Imagine if there were 500 institutes admission to which would give a student a reasonable guarantee of good life, would there have been such desperation to get into an IIT? A simple minded analysis:

Despite having such a large population, India has severe crisis of high-quality human resource be it in the academia (faculty members or students) or in the Industry.

We have a few very good institutes of higher education.

This is a rather long thread on the challenges of conducting scientific research at an IIT or an IISER or IISc. I am highlighting the issues that have cropped up in the recent years due to Govt's genuine efforts in bringing about fiscal discipline with tax payers' money. 1 of 25 Stand alone, none of the measures that have been rolled out is inappropriate. However, it has crippled our ability to conduct research. If remedial measures are not taken on an urgent basis, the whole ecosystem will collapse. 2 of 25

I am reaching out to all of you to help the young family of the Valmiki community of Nankari Village.

Santosh is a science hero who needs your help.

Please help by a small donation and/or by amplifying this message.

A thread on Santosh' story 👇 In 2006, Jonaki @sen_jonaki and I joined the faculty of IIT Kanpur. We study how embryonic development takes place. For this we use fertilized chicken eggs. The eggs that we get from the market are not fertilized.

PhD admission season coming up. Here are a few tips one can think about. A thread: 1. The most critical part of the PhD program is mentor-mentee fit. I know so many examples where students are perfectly happy with so-called "slave driving" PIs and unhappy students in an easy going lab.
Thus, mentor-mentee fit is subjective.

I am writing this thread to showcase the preeminence of Indian Universities in Biology research in the 50s and 60s. I am focusing on Biology just because I have some knowledge of the subject. Even here I am certain to miss many achievements and achievers. I request other colleagues to add to this thread on other subjects:

In 1920s Calcutta University and Allahabad University were among the best places in world for Physics research. Erwin Schrodinger accepted to head the Physics department of AU - allduniv.ac.in/department/phy…

To ensure that JEE advanced exams are conducted while observing social distancing norms more centres are being deployed. This means that more representatives from IITs will be needed this year. I have volunteered for this duty after a gap of five years. #neetJEE2020 It is our combined responsibility to ensure that students don't lose a year due to the pandemic. Delaying JEE any further will mean just that. Also, none of the IITs have hostel or classroom capacity to run two batches simultaneously.

@IAmSudhirMishra Sir, glad you asked. We generally stay away from lime light (read bragging) but since you asked I will brief you of the different things that has been happening at IIT Kanpur.

PPEs - unconventional but easy to scale and cheap - have been designed and are being used. The design has been made public so that anyone can scale it - hindustantimes.com/education/iit-…

Reporting from the ground.

I am associated with the startup ecosystem for last SEVEN years. Undeniably, this government has done a tremendous job of front loading the startup economy. More funds are available and the ecosystem building is in full swing. 1/n The effort is being led by @IndiaDST and its associated organs and @BIRAC_2012. The officials in these organizations are working overtime to make the lives of young wannabe entrepreneurs easier. Many PSUs are also joining hands. 2/n
