How to earn ₹50,000 / $700 per month on the side, mostly passively

From $100/mo to $5000/mo ideas and beyond. Including the shifts in mindset & frameworks necessary

Based on my experience running tons of side hustles over the past 5 years

1 RT = 1 insight

🧵Thread incoming? Based on @BehereBaba’s thought provoking tweet the other day.

Will compose my thoughts into a thread if there’s interest / will delete this thread otherwise haha

The future of online education:

People don’t want to just be a number in a database, watching videos alone.

People want to have interesting experiences and form meaning relationships with others.

Big opportunity. Too often companies focus on just the “hard outcomes”

- Getting a job
- Learning the skills

But miss out on the “soft outcomes” like

- Making new friends
- Gaining clarity & confidence
- Referrals from a trusted community
- A lifelong alumni network you can lean on for support

Want to start a side project in 2021 but don't know how?

Tips
💡 Maintain a running list of ideas
💡 Add to it every week, even the bad ones
💡 Participate in Twitter convos for insights

Once it fills up
💡 Pick something that seems worth pursuing
💡 Make a v1 over the weekend Keep in mind that your v1 doesn't have to be a perfect product. It can be a

✔️ WhatsApp / Telegram channel
✔️ Landing page with newsletter
✔️ No-code MVP with Webflow or similar

The goal is to build MOMENTUM. Once you get started, the ideas start flowing.

The biggest difference between old school online ed (Udemy, Skillshare) and newer live learning models (
@10kdesigners, Building a Second Brain etc)

Passive learning vs Active learning

Reading isn't enough, you have to DO. Passive: watching someone design a webpage in Figma
Active: jumping into Figma and doing it yourself

Passive: reading business school case studies
Active: actually starting a business

Teach everything you know. Some days I feel like TEIK so that I can move on to the next thing.

Other days I feel like TEIK and serving others might be the only thing.

Have been doing a bunch of new initiatives around design education and community! @10kdesigners

Hard to keep track of – my side hustles have side hustles.

Quick thread to document what’s happening right now 👇🏻 It all started around 2 years back with the ABNUX YouTube channel.

This is the best place to start if you want a crash course in what UI/UX design is all about!

Oh and we just hit 10k subscribers this week ☺️

🌧 Wave 1: MOOCs (Coursera, edX)

💧 Wave 2: Aggregators, platforms (Udemy, Skillshare)

💦 Wave 3: Self hosted platforms (Teachable, Podia)

🌊 Wave 4: Cohort based live instruction (@beondeck, @10kdesigners) The difference is not just in delivery mechanism, but student experience and outcomes too

Love this insight.

Goes quite well with the “cohort based learning” model that I’m experimenting with for @10kdesigners.

The anti-Udemy. Better outcomes and personal connection over hyper optimisation & commoditisation of content Even discussed this idea with my students: the idea of the Program and the Meta Program.

There’s levels to it – what’s the UX of a UX program? How should you learn beyond what’s directly being taught? Image

Some updates, positives and negatives:

- Received about 300 applications for the 30 spots. Feeling immense gratitude, thank you everyone for your trust in me 🙏

- Have finalized about half the batch. Going through intense prep on the curriculum and training modules 🧠 - This is my first 'proper startup' since @LisnApp nearly 3y back. Relearning, switching mindset back to founder mode has been really exciting

- Spending time at @unacademy during hyper-growth has helped, feeling a lot calmer and focussed this time around

What if the world has permanently changed and we just don't realize it yet? Resisting hard to put together a thread.

Great thread by @hvpandya! Want to add a couple things I’ve picked up about

“Working on your core skills” vs
“Building a personal brand”

1/n The very first thing that you absolutely need to know

Working on your skills: Mandatory
Working on a personal brand: Optional

A personal brand should ideally be a byproduct of the great work you do.

For folks worried about their privacy after the Jio-Facebook deal, I highly recommend running a security audit on your accounts using @JumboPrivacy

uisources.com/app/jumbo via @uisources

1/n Image Jumbo lets you run an audit on your accounts, find hard-to-reach privacy settings and more.

It also constantly checks your email against @haveibeenpwned to notify you when a new leak might have compromised your passwords

🚨📚 Launch day! Booklets.io is now live on @ProductHunt via @kevinwdavid producthunt.com/posts/booklets… Image @ProductHunt @kevinwdavid Story of how it got started

Last year, I noticed a trend of "micro-blogs" on Instagram. Instead of just pretty shots, creators were sharing their process, their learnings and teaching what they knew

These "micro-blogs" aka booklets were a great example of visual learning

“If, in some cataclysm, all of scientific knowledge were to be destroyed, and only one sentence passed on to the next generation of creatures, what statement would contain the most information in the fewest words?” Alright, here’s my attempt at an answer. At some level, this is a trick question.

- A “sentence” implies that you’d be transferring in spoken or written word

- Assumption is that the next generation would be immediately after, but actually could be thousands of years apart

My last day at @unacademy 🙂

I’ve had an incredible 2.5 years working with @gauravmunjal and @hemezh, building up the design team, working on the Learner + Educator platforms and biggest of all — Unacademy Plus

From zero to 80k+ active subscribers and $30M ARR 🚀

After shutting down @LisnApp in 2017, I wasn’t really looking for a job. But in just a couple conversations with @gauravmunjal, I knew that the opportunity + potential was too good to give up

The problem with organised religion is that it’s come to represent being controlled by a system, giving up free will

Whereas the actual teachings are about Self Realization – that you are a powerful being and have the power of the universe on your side Solution? Idon’t think forming new religions works. However, I think more & more people are waking up, finding the world lacking meaning

Making the teachings & insights more accessible helps, but it’s ultimately a very personal decision of building positive habits & actions
