Upwork is currently a $1.36B market cap businesses, but it peak at nearly 6x that amount

What’s interesting about this business besides the natural cyclicality it hit with Covid (up) and the tech equity market pullback (down)?

A few thoughts for operators and investors: Image 1. Business fundamentals

Upwork has been growing in the mid to low 20s percent per year except for an outlier year in 2021 as companies shifted to remote work and increase their spend on places like Upwork

I’d guess many digital labor marketplaces follow similar patterns Image

It used to take me 1-3 weeks to write an essay

Between the research, the outline, the drafting, the editing and re-editing, it always felt like a slog

However, in the past 7 days I’ve completed *3* essays I’m proud of (an improvement of 5-10x)

Here’s how: The first thing you need to know is that this is essentially a co-writing process

I’ve been working very closely with @jrdngonen on these pieces and it’s critical that you have someone:

A) You trust
B) Has similar taste

From Nov 15 -> June 1, tech stocks have plummeted:

$DASH: -71.2%
$HOOD: -73.2%
$COIN: -80.1%

If you’re working at a private technology company and received options recently…

Well, what do you *think* happened to them?

What to do with your options in a downturn: First let’s take a step back.

Do you even *want* to learn about your equity?

Kind of a strange question, but a lot of people choose not to learn about it (explicitly or implicitly)

And listen – I get it

ISOs, NSOs, AMT, QSBS… it’s daunting

Bootstrapping a software company is the best way work for yourself and build wealth

Jason Cohen is an entrepreneur who has grown 4 (!) software companies from 0 to >$1m in rev

His largest (WP Engine) does >$100m in revenue

Here's his exact plan on how to bootstrap startups 👇 First let's be clear about the goal: to create a self-funded software startup that gets $10k in revenue per month

We aren't trying to change the world or invest something crazy

Just make enough to sustain a lifestyle and prove that it's a business even worth working on

I've spent thousands of hours researching dozens of companies

Here's a thread of how I write my investment memos

It's organized into 5 sections:

- Idea Generation
- Where to Research
- What to Look For
- Note Taking & Organization
- Pulling it Together

👇 Idea Generation

Before researching a company, you have to, well, have a company to research

But time is limited: how do you decide which company to study?

As much as I’d like to have a fancy method, most of my ideas come from Twitter, podcasts, or talking to friends

Spent this lazy Sunday afternoon thinking about careers, and life

I don't really believe there's a "right answer" to how to chose a job, but here are a bunch of perspectives that helped me form my own 1. Notes on Doing Things, Ribbon Farm

"What Disneyland creates is a zone of hyper-agency, where many behaviors are available, all enjoyable, all fun."
