There’s a disturbing trend in LA politics that the media isn't talking about: More and more candidates are running as Democrats, but hiding the fact that they’re backed by right-wing Republicans.

It’s happening in CD4, where I live, and it’s going to work unless we stop it. 🧵 It’s nearly impossible to win local election as a Republican in Los Angeles. But that doesn’t mean that right-wing groups and the big business lobby don’t exist. Instead, they run right-wing candidates as “Democrats”, then secretly bankroll them.

My first job in media was as a VFX artist, and I have enormous respect for them and their work. My criticism is of the bosses, for using VFX as a tool to cut costs, underpaying artists, and forcing them to work under brutal conditions. I apologize for not making that more clear. I believe wholeheartedly that VFX workers deserve a union, and stand with the brave workers at Marvel right now who are organizing with IATSE. Again, I regret deeply that my phrasing on this podcast made it seem otherwise.

I'm incredibly proud of how transparent our union is. In the @WGAWest's strike announcement, we included a list of our proposals, and the AMPTP's responses. Read it for yourself: it explains in black and white we're forced to go on strike. ImageImage We have proposals that would prevent the studios from eliminating the writers' room; they refused to discuss them. We have proposals to protect screenwriters from free work, that would have *COST THEM NOTHING TO IMPLEMENT*: They rejected them and offered an "educational meeting."

🚨LA: This could be a wave election for the progressive movement in our city, but it ALL depends on turnout, and young people are VASTLY underrepresented among voters. If you want to build a better LA, remind your friends to vote or put their ballot in the mail TODAY!🚨 Not sure about the more obscure races on the ballot? I put together a voter guide that makes it quick and easy.

I'm going to be very clear: Lisa's beautiful show was cancelled because of the Warner/Discovery merger. After the merger, Zaslav announced $3 BILLION in budget cuts. Long-time execs who fought for shows like Tuca were laid off. As a result, WBD has cancelled *38* animated shows. Hell, as a result of the merger WBD shuttered AN ENTIRE ANIMATION STUDIO. @xoxogossipgita wrote a terrific piece on how the animation industry has been devastated as a result. Dozens of beloved shows over, thousands out of work. ign.com/articles/why-l…

This is unbelievable: LA City Council President Nury Martinez was recorded calling a fellow councilmember's 2 year-old Black son "a little monkey" and said she wanted to give him a "beat-down." She said this about a TWO YEAR OLD. @CD6Nury must resign. latimes.com/california/sto… ImageImage It gets worse: In the recordings, Nury Martinez says of District Attorney George Gascón "f--- him, he's for the Blacks", and plots with @kdeleon and @gilcedillo to chop up @nithyavraman's district in order to weaken her. Los Angeles: There's a measure on this year's ballot that should be getting a LOT more attention. It's called Measure ULA, and it's a once-in-a-decade chance to radically address the housing crisis and make LA affordable for ALL. Let me explain why it's such a big deal: 🧵 In case you hadn't noticed, LA is in the midst of a stifling housing crisis. SIXTY PERCENT of renting Angelenos are rent-burdened, meaning they spent more than 1/3rd of their income on rent. Housing is so unaffordable that homelessness has increased 31% in just the past 4 years.

Remember when the promise of streaming was an endless library where even niche shows would be watchable forever? Now b/c of the merger, HBO Max is DELETING dozens of shows, just to save $ on taxes and residuals. A needless, shameful waste. variety.com/2022/tv/news/h… Some of the shows being memory-holed were hits; Summer Camp Island had 100 episodes and tons of fans! Others were about to premiere new seasons, which now no one will ever see. Creators spent YEARS pouring themselves into these projects; most weren't even told this was happening.

This headline from the @LATimes isn't just blatantly false and misleading; it's also the result of a years-long propaganda campaign by the fossil fuel industry to halt progress on climate change. Thread: In May, the LA City Council passed a measure that would require electric stoves and appliances in all new construction buildings in the city. It is not a "ban." Existing homes and businesses are not affected: ONLY NEW CONSTRUCTION falls under the new rule.

🚨 Only 5% of voters under 34 have returned their ballot in L.A. Meanwhile, nearly HALF of all votes cast are by people over 65. Unless you want to let retirees decide the fate of our city, return your ballot by Tuesday and urge your friends to do the same. Young people are actually the LARGEST group of voters in Los Angeles! But turnout is so low, we're letting old people run the city instead, despite the fact that young people are MORE affected by city policies on things like climate change (since they'll live longer!)

Los Angeles folks: I believe that we all need to be a LOT more worried about Rick Caruso's candidacy. We're on the verge of allowing a Trumpian, anti-abortion billionaire to buy our city government. And he can do it this June, in the primary, if we don't stop him. Thread: It's not common knowledge, but if a single candidate gets more than 50% of the vote in the primary this June, they skip the general election and win the office outright. I think that Caruso is gunning to win this way, and I think he has a chance of making it happen.

Need proof that corporate mega-mergers are bad? Pull up a chair while I tell you the story of how a merger killed not just my show, but also put an entire TV network worth of workers out of a job. Mergers cause layoffs, reduce our media options, and give the powerful even more control over what we see and hear. Solidarity with the workers at Activision/Blizzard who have been through hell the past few years and woke up to this news today. Keep fighting. @ABetterABK

There’s been much discussion in Writer’s Guild circles about whether digital media shops fit into what has historically been a film/TV union. Once I took a closer look at the shops in question, I realized that most of them actually work directly in the film/TV industry! Thread: Here is the list of the WGAE’s digital shops. If you go through it, the majority actually make television, film, podcasts, and other media that either resembles past WGA member work, or represents spaces we’ve been trying to organize for years. wgaeast.org/organize/digit…

The truth about homelessness, from @frankshyong: It's the natural result of a system that treats homes as an investment vehicle for the affluent, rather than a public necessity. To end it, we must finally begin to value human rights over property rights. buff.ly/36LUUQE The middle-class demand that property values always rise; the expectation that one should be able to buy a home, then sell it a few years later for a six-figure profit; the protection of homeowners' investment above all else; these are the causes of homelessness.

Which 90s sci-fi show set on a space station and featuring a war-traumatized commanding officer, a tough female second-in-command, and a serialized narrative about the conflict between a failing empire and the former people they subjugated should I watch Before you vote, please know that B5 was just remastered in HD for HBO Max, DS:9 is still in SD, and Farscape is apparently only available via 6 year old Dailymotion links.

Vons and Albertsons stores in California just laid off every one of their full-time, union delivery drivers, and will replace them with DoorDash gig workers who receive no benefits as a direct result of Prop 22. buff.ly/358CR6Z And if that makes you mad, get madder: GrubHub is using Prop 22 as an excuse to jack up fees and subtly suggest that customers make up the difference by not tipping: latimes.com/business/techn…

Vote #NoOnProp22, not just because it takes essential rights away from workers who need them, but because it would send a message to every corporation in the country that they can just buy their way out of following the law. (thread) Uber, Lyft and DoorDash started their $200 million dollar proposition fund before AB5 was even passed, in an effort to threaten the legislature to cut them a sweetheart deal. When legislators stood their ground, they said they "spend what it takes to win."

Looking things up while doing a crossword puzzle is not "cheating." It makes them better. THREAD Point the First: Crossword puzzles are the ultimate low-pressure leisure activity. They're not graded. There's no schoolmarm hovering overhead, rapping you on the knuckles if you peek at the Merriam-Webster. Quite literally no one cares a whit what the fuck you do!

For 20 years, CH paid some of the best young comedians, writers, and artists in the country to do nothing but come up with the funniest shit ever. Today, they all lost their jobs. That sucks. Let me tell you why. (Thread) vulture.com/2020/01/colleg… The slow (and then quick) death of CollegeHumor, Funny or Die, and your other favorite online comedy sites was not an accident. It was the result of Facebook's deliberate effort to kill the indie video industry, in part by massively falsifying viewer data.
