Over the past month, Hassaan Gondal (shorturl.at/auEQU) & I toured the flood affected areas of Sindh. Following thread documents observations, concerns & questions, esp. for researchers in academia & public policy: ImageImageImageImage First off, lil purpose is served in contesting scale of damage. Indus Basin is humongous, & the ripple effects of any freak weather event will be felt far & wide. Pace of glacial melt in 3rd pole IS a direct outcome of global warming, & world MUST help in mitigation & adaptation

I'd never put anything past US, so let's say there is a threat. How does it feel to lose govt. over support to Russia - a clear aggressor in Ukraine - on eve of its invasion? Russia is not sending you wheat, & the pipeline is exactly tht - a pipedream. A hill worth dying on? I'm all praise for non-aligned independent foreign policy, but wasnt the visit abt spiting US? Good on you, but tht was purely an emotional play, not a rational clear-headed approach to maintaining independent foreign relations.

Troublesome to see complete absence of nuance in the ongoing debate on rent seeking behavior in textile industry. How can an industry go from greatest beneficiary of GoP's largesse to 'blackmailers' in less than a year boggles mind:
brecorder.com/news/40141807 First off, APTMA ≠ Textile (DOES NOT)
According to CMI (FY16), Pak has over 7500 Textile establishments, & ~2400 apparel manufacturers. Majority are cottage & mid-sized units.
APTMA has no more thn 400 members, of those majority are spinning, or vertically-integrated units.

Carefully read thru 186 pages of CCP's order in the case of sugar industry. I have no legal competence to comment on the legality of the judgement, but have following observations: 1- Order consists of 100s of paragraphs which seek to establish CCP's jurisdiction on the matter, but offers VERY limited grounds for its primary conclusion: whether the association & its members shared commercially sensitive info. "with the object of distorting competition"

(warning: not a textile analyst)
over the past month, i have attempted to document emerging trends in spinning industry: Pak cotton import bill has doubled over past year, imports are only making up for loss in domestic cotton output. Pak overall cotton consumption is not increasing, infact seem to have flatlined at 14Mn bales (of 170kg, or 2.3Mn metric tons) for much of past decade

What's truly shameful is that under this incompetent government, subsidy was given on cottonseed "to incentivize sowing", and then germination requirement was reduced to 60% when standard is 80-90%, while target area was reduced (1/n) Imagine how shitty seed quality really has to be. That move blatantly pandered to local seed producers. Now the NFS&R minister is once again peddling the proposal for MSP in cotton. If there is such massive shortage, why does the govt need to step in & fix prices?

Although we are quick to point out administrative failures in wheat management, this is an indictment of central bank's role, which by policy crowds out private sector participation in wheat buying by diallowing bank-lending to pvt. mills during Apr to Jun brecorder.com/news/40082044/…
