This is terrific advice. I specifically cast a wide net when I'm looking for sources/interviews because I find you're more likely to get a rich, new story by speaking to someone whose story hasn't already been told. Half the feedback I got about my Kotaku piece on the influence of JRPGs on fantasy writers was from Sanderson fans telling me I should've spoken to him because he loves video games. But, like, Brandon has a HUGE platform and his story's already been told. kotaku.com/how-japanese-r…

The trouble with “free speech” on Twitter is that it’s also a business whose main path to profitability is promoting content from people you don’t follow and don’t want to hear from in the first place. Mashing together social groups under the blanket protection of “feee speech” only benefits bad faith actors, predatory harassers, and fascists. They benefit from not being held to account for their actions at the cost of those who just wanna talk about books or whatever.

This is an *excellent* resource.

I'll add these to the spreadsheet, but in the interest of data, here are some rates I've been paid:

Wired: $500 — Features
Kotaku: $150 — Feature
Lifehacker: $200 — Listicles
Input $300-1300 — Features
GamesBeat: $500 — Feature $20 is too low even for a pithy 200 word news piece. It takes time and effort to *develop a pitch*, which is often the most challenging part—then source it, write it, revise it, and file it. 10c/word isn't enough to live on. My latest Wired piece works out to about 25c/word.

🚨 WARNING: Proud dad story incoming. 🚨

Last week, one of my daughter's kindergarten classmates got scraped up after a fall at recess. Some of the older kids laughed at her, which obviously made her feel sad. They found a teacher who asked my daughter and another classmate to join the girl who had been hurt in the classroom for the rest of recess. They wanted to give her a chance to settle down and nurture friendship among the students.

Hey, y'all! I redesigned and relaunched my website! I'm particularly fond of the new bibliography. And... is that a blog? Check it out here: aidanmoher.com 🏗️ Thread: Since this is what I do for a living (building and designing websites), I wanted to talk about author websites and how I thought about mine as I created it and filled with with content.
