I think maybe now is the time to talk about DDOS attacks, for everyone who's not techy, and how we can use them to perhaps hose the Texas anti-abortion law, a thread So: DDOS = Distributed Denial Of Service.

Any website you visit sits on a tech stack that consists of servers, network connections, databases, that kind of thing. Each website is built with a certain level of traffic in mind.

I went looking for info on the idiots who organized the anti-vax protest at VGH today. They're basically a bunch of nurses and former nurses who appear to have gone off the deep end into woo woo Gwyneth Paltrow GOOP nonsense. We have, in turn:

- a former nurse who is now a "holistic nutritionist" and totally anti-vax, who is also against masks for no goddamn reason

PSA for this: how to poison a dataset 101

a.k.a. how to make a database admin want to murder you in your sleep, a thread Okay so this is from my experience as a senior web dev who specializes in data processing and analysis.

I also did some anti-fraud work in online advertising back in the day

I swear, at this point I'm still on LinkedIn because the messages I get are HILARIOUS.

Case in point: some marketing guy inviting me to a seminar that will supposedly teach me about this new data analytics platform It will apparently teach me how to create databases, run queries, and "receive actionable insights"

Whyyyy do these guys all sound the same

Right, I did some reading and here’s what likely happened with Parler. Lots of crossed wires here. First up: someone noticed that Parler uses sequential integers in the API endpoint to get content.

An API endpoint is just a URL with a value added onto the end that tells the system what you want to get back.

Okay something I’ve been thinking about this morning: WTF was the actual intention of the MAGAts who stormed the Capitol building? There’s all these people on Reddit/here saying that this was an organized coup. And TBH I keep thinking that “organized” is a strong word. 90% of them had no aim other than showing up and shouting.

The other 10% are the ones that should worry everyone.

The cops just let a bunch of neo-Nazis waltz into the Capitol and play a fucking power fantasy LARP, then let them go.

I mean, apart from all the obvious racism of that action, is anyone else thinking this has a little bit of “let them have their fun” to it The other thing I keep thinking about is the Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver, TBH.

The VPD basically just let a couple hundred fuckwits tear up downtown. Like the place next day was wrecked, all broken glass and whatever.

Okay I can only conclude by this that rich people are the stupidest motherfuckers in the room.

I mean, I’m not rich, okay, but I am pleased by the taxes I pay. I’m not even being sarcastic. I am happy to pay taxes. They’re not onerous (we live VERY comfortably, even in Vancouver) and I’m certainly in a higher tax bracket than most people. It’s not even because of altruism, though that definitely plays a part.

Great bit of journalism here by Sophia :) fun fact, we had some verrrrry interesting conversations about what exactly the Trump campaign might be doing on TikTok.

So let’s talk about that! Super glad I could be of help btw :P

Anyhoo: my background = senior web dev, data analysis a specialty, worked in online marketing/advertising a while back

Reddit has decided that I am a farmer interested in farm equipment. Like, here’s the issue with online marketing based on bad data. How much money is is Massey Ferguson wasting on showing adverts to people who will NEVER be interested in their products?

Okay, random thing I’ve been thinking about: Brad Parscale.

And this is just me thinking out loud, theorycrafting as it where.

Rumour has it that Parscale is going to turn on Trump and help nail the Trump campaign for finance violations. I looked at Parscale’s LinkedIn and it looks to me like the resume of a dude who knows tech. What I said before about the Trump data operation is this: Trump might stiff the contractors who work on his real estate but he is NOT stiffing the tech people.

So everyone’s been talking about this and it’s all been a Thing here over the last few days, and now I’m going to explain why this is a junk analysis and a waste of everyone’s time, a thread. For the record, I am looking at just this: they trained a machine learning model on a dataset that included generated faces and photos and stuff, and then used it on historical portraits to see if presentations of trustworthiness changed over time.

I have some advice about indie publishing:

ABANDON HOPE ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE Seriously though - KDP basically belongs to whoever can publish the fastest, whether by cranking out bad books or by buying manuscripts. Also those with the biggest ad spend budgets.

KU is a shitshow due to scammers with fake books and Amazon’s anti-fraud systems are a joke.

Explaining my @:

Okay this is going to be a fucking journey and I hope you’re all on board with it Back in the far off mists of time in the early 00s when I was in college, me and my gaming buddies would go out and pull LAN all-nighters and play Battlefield 1942. When I had to pick a handle, I called myself Aether Valentine.

Good morning, here is a random thread on data collection because I’ve been thinking about that lately.

This is the difference between DuckDuckGo, Google, and Facebook. So here’s the deal: Google is EVIL because it collects and maintains a profile of you, the user, and tailors search results.

DuckDuckGo does not and specifically doesn’t collect personal data at all.

Christ on a bike >< okay I'm sorry for all the programming related threads lately but the stuff I'm dealing with is completely ASININE and if I don't rant about it somewhere, I may just explode.

It's about React again, obviously I mean - FFS React is just SUCH absolute dogshit. I have no idea what problem it was meant to solve, unless that problem was "our front end applications are too simple, how can we change that"

And I mean, it all comes down to its bullshit state management

So I’ve been wondering about this YA book and I’m baffled as to why a white author would just pull a culture out of a hat, as it were, to tell this particular story. Like... if you want to write about a girl overcoming sexism and following her dreams, do you really mean to tell me there’s no relevant setting in your own culture where you can’t tell that story?

It’s weird, as if the addition of bits of other cultures doesn’t really matter.

Okay, here’s some musing on the UK’s GCSEs and A-levels debacle.

Every person involved in data analysis should be watching this. It will become a case study in the future. The backstory: with exams canceled due to COVID19, it was decided in the UK that kids would have their grades assigned by their teachers’ estimates.

Bear in mind that these grades are what determine university placement for the kids.

Okay let's talk COVID19 stats.

What I've been thinking about this morning is how macro-social factors influence responses to the pandemic. First example: Sweden.

Here's the deaths per million comparison for various countries.

Okay listen, I want to talk about Trump’s godawful penthouse apartment. I think you can tell a lot about a person by their living space.

I have questions. Trump standing in his godaw... Leaving aside how he looks photoshopped literally every time I see him in this room, leading me to suspect it’s all a product of someone’s demented imagination:

WHY is this room so relentlessly awful

Welp. Waiting in the queue to be tested for coronavirus.

Bored off my tits. Been waiting about 45 mins already so I’d say I came at the wrong time. Plus it’s Monday.
