It was the result of Italian encroachments south of their colony of Eritrea on the Red Sea. Though bound by the Treaty of Wichale (1889) to friendship, the Italians and Ethiopians had different opinions about the nature of that friendship. 2/14

Menelik II (ዳግማዊ ምኒሊክ) 💚💛❤️

1. Menelik II was born on Aug 17, 1844, in Ankober, Shewa, Ethiopia. His father was Prince Haile-Melekot, Son of King Sahle Sillasse, & His mother, Woizero Ejigayehu Lemma Adyamo, was a palace servant. He was baptized as Sahle Mariam. 2. Menelik (ምኒሊክ) took his name from Menelik I, the son of King Solomon and Makeda, Queen of Sheba. Menelik I was a king in 10th century BC. Through his father, Menelik II claimed descent from this Solomonic line.

1/5 On the 1st of March 126 years ago, traditional warriors & farmers as well as women defeated a well-armed Italian army in the town of Adwa, Ethiopia. The outcome of this battle ensured Ethiopia’s independence, making it the only African country never to be colonised. #Adwa 🇪🇹 2/5 The triumph of 🇪🇹|ns at Adwa heralded hope of freedom for the Africans in Africa & beyond. It inspired Africans to embark on liberation struggles from forces of colonialism. That is why forces of resistance in the 20 century used Ethiopia as a representation of freedom. #Adwa
