I'm Doing The Work and reading Angela Davis's Are Prisons Obsolete. It starts with the gobsmacking claim that anti-slavery was a fringe position until the Civil War. This would be a surprise to Pennsylvania, which outlawed slavery in 1780. She repeatedly claims that "no one could imagine a world without slavery." Not only were Northern states outlawing it mere years after the Revolution, it was being outlawed all over the world. We're not off to a great start here.

The activist effort to get Americans to use a clunkier demonym is annoying, but I'm more offended by scrubbing "immigrant." It's not a dirty word. It's actually what many great Americans have been. I had to look up how "seminal" is masculine. Apparently it derives from the *se- PIE root meaning seed or having the properties of the seed, which is also the root of semen. If you need the resources of an actual linguist to learn why something is offensive, it's not offensive.

It's weird how defensive people get when you say Trump isn't funny. I think in 500 years historians are going to teach that America had the most sophisticated democracy the world had ever seen, and in the end that was their undoing because no one knew what they were voting for anymore. You just can't expect the average person to know the difference between a candidate's floor votes vs their committee votes, or the limits of the Byrd Rule. The public is judging candidates by how they play a game you need a college degree to understand.
