A thread for those who spend time in bear country, especially grizzlies. Yesterday, @FerrenbergLab and I were charged at close quarters by a big male grizzly. We are ok thanks to some quick & brave as hell actions from Scott. But we want to share some lessons learned. 1/x @FerrenbergLab It’s easy and natural to get complacent around low probability risks. We were not doing anything unusual for many who go in bear country: walking a bit too quietly, bear spray holstered. But each was a product of some complacency and false assumptions of possible risk.

Some thoughts on academic leadership (and leadership in general), spurred by this one year anniversary of a terrible day. 1/x Earlier today, the @MansfieldCenter shared this. It’s a good quote, and it reflects something I’ve thought a lot about over the last few years. Without question, we need to find ways to lessen divisions in this country if we are to solve our most pressing challenges.

No matter what happens, it seems right tonight to share a story about @JoeBiden It was just a brief moment in his life, but it will stay with me always. I’ve told parts of it to some, but all of it to only a very few. (1/many) We all know he lost his son to a glioblastoma. The same cancer took my wife @thenemergut far too young. All in the midst of our young daughter battling through her own brain tumor.
