People view literature as essentially homework. This idea is planted super early, trying to create an enforced subject who 'loves reading'. Reading as a result is a sort of moral good connected to self-improvement and productivity. But it's a totally toxic idea to literature
If you make people see something as homework, they will not enjoy it, they won't even do it, they'll just chastise themselves for not doing it. Or, they'll go through it like they're reciting flashcards. No joy, rote activity performed to get a good grade at adulthood
