For any #WGA #WGAStrong folks who are struggling, a quick 🧵 about decent part time jobs for writers and where to find them. The good news is, you really do have very important and marketable skills! You can do better than bartending… (1/?) First, START EARLY. It can take 4-6 weeks to get a job if you’re unlucky. Begin looking before your bank account is running on fumes. All the stuff I’m suggesting is hourly / part-time / contract work so if the strike ends suddenly, you’re good.

@ManMadeMoon @riteshwriter There’s part of me that yells “if I could find investors, TOMORROW” but also there’s a part of me that goes “actually the comics market is in a massive transition right now and it’s not that simple.”

Here’s more than you ever wanted to know about the subject: @ManMadeMoon @riteshwriter The death of Comixology only inconveniences the monthly comic audience, which is ageing / slowly dying out anyway. The kids read Shonen Jump (on its own app) Webtoons / Tapas, or graphic novels. (1/?)

Finally got back to posting new episodes of my webcomic REVERSAL and lo, I have almost 1,000 subscribers on Webtoon but only 50 on Tapas. Have other creators found Weboon sub numbers to be that much better? (I’m just on Canvas / scrub tier) (even though this series is fully drawn I haven’t posted anything since June because other deadlines ate my life… and then it was like… oh, HELLO)

Twitter is going to Hell because Musk is misunderstanding the road to profitability. It’s not making people pay to use it. No social media platform does that. It’s not even “free speech” or eliminating bots. It’s fixing the ads. (1/?) Big advertisers spend most of their paid social money at Meta. Why? Not because its sites are good or anything, but because it offers the best ad targeting and conversion / response tracking, even post iOS 14. Twitter, on the other hand? Terrible.

Editors, if you are mad about the Warren Ellis stuff, here’s a simple thing to do that helps in the long run:

publish more women.

I see some of you out here talking loud when you’ve only published the work of one (1) woman, attend to your own houses first, sirs And: hire more women, queer people, and PoC as senior decision-makers / editors / publishers.

If your decision group is all cis white males, the cards are stacked for you to continue this crony system that lets established abusers continue and pushes marginalized creators out

I wish some editor would believe in me enough to be like “we’re going to pay you to write this series and you don’t have to kickstart it or fight for it to be made, we support you, just relax and go wild” 90% of my work will still be creator-owned but just once I would like to not have to fight for one (1) projecf

Uhh friend, I wrote TWISTED ROMANCE two summers ago with @ImageComics and it was nominated for three Eisners and sold super well, there’s also a TON of YA romance graphic novels like LAURA DEAN (all the awards) and BLOOM (translated into 3 languages) My least favourite genre of hot take is “a specific thing isn’t available in exactly the same way it was when I was young, therefore it clearly no longer exists”

The Deluxe edition, signed by Duncan & myself, was a Kickstarter exclusive and the Z2 web store only has like 400 copies (minus what’s already been sold) that rounded up our print run to a figure printers would accept. tl;dr get on it: z2comics.com/products/madi-… if you’re really lucky you might get one of the ones I signed like this:

“lucky”

Gather round, writers. Let’s talk about what literary agents do and whether you need one. This is mainly going to be oriented towards comics/graphic novel people but prose folks, I’ll try to include you too. (1/many) I’m a mid-career writer with a bunch of books out, both graphic novels & prose fiction. I have a literary agent, a book-to-film / entertainment manager, and an entertainment lawyer. All of them take small percentages of any deals they work on for me. I’m GLAD to pay them.

On Warren Ellis: Fame (or lack thereof) doesn’t excuse bad actions, and people need to stop focusing on that.

Abusive & predatory behaviour is not magically more acceptable if you’re an unknown rather than someone with “influence”. Any time you’re nearly twice the age of the women you’re creeping on, there’s a power imbalance. Doesn’t matter if you’re the bin man or a writer with his own multi-thousand-person forum.

I want you all to think very hard about what female, PoC & queer comics creators have gone through to get where they are, both the ones who fought their way into DC & Marvel and the many more who couldn’t because they spoke up, or were “trouble” and had to carve out indie careers We shouldn’t have to be this strong, or this silent, just to stay employed.

The great thing about living around the corner from NYC’s best ramen place is knowing that there’s always a place available at the bar if you’re by yourself, even when there’s a line halfway down the block to get in In related news: psychic powers definitely don’t exist and thank god bc folks in line trying to kill me with their eyes

Velvet Buzzsaw is basically a giallo and I am all here for it Gyllenhaal’s physicality in it is distracting — it would have made Zawe Ashton’s arc more interesting if it was a less attractive actor playing Morf, if she were in the positiom women so often are of having someone kinda gross but career useful creeping on her

Okay, so this entire article is Some Bullshit, a thread (yes, this is about Zhao’s BLOOD HEIR): An alternate title for this thread is So You Wrote A Bad Book And Now You’re Whining About The Consequences

Fuck it, the thread nobody asked for: female sexuality and the male gaze, explained via “Twerk” vs “Pumps & A Bump” So, when women say they don’t like how they’re portrayed (in a film, on a comic book cover, etc) the hetero male response is usually that we’re anti-sex or no fun.

This is almost never the case! It’s not about the sexy, it’s about how the sexy is shown. Let’s watch videos!

Positivity counter-balance! Twitter, what actors / actresses do you see in a leading role and are like “wow, this person makes interesting choices / does good work, this film is on my radar now”?

(Be honest if it’s just ones you’re thirsty for & will watch in any old garbage) Me: Jake Gyllenhaal. Rachel Weisz. Increasingly, John C Reilly. Channing Tatum. Margot Robbie.

I’m packing up my mom’s house. It’s a task so large that my brain refuses to try to encompass all that it means, and instead is seizing on tiny, ultimately irrelevant details as if they have the power to shake the earth.

Such as the geranium that refuses to die. Nobody’s lived in this house since end of August, and even then, my mom wasn’t exactly in a state to take care of things.

All living things had left the house, except three raggedy orchinds and a giant coral-pink geranium that I never recall anyone watering.

Starting Monday right by reading strashilki and fucked-up old Pioneer stories, for research

As someone who grew up on Edward Gorey poems I feel right at home I should not be laughing so hard at these, but also:

“This week's assignment is Leo Tolstoy,
A long boring story that nobody enjoys.
Anna Karenina is not like John Wayne,
Chunks of Lit teacher hang from the train.”
