The Moldavian Style, a 🧵
Join me for a look at how Gothic and Eastern Byzantine architecture were united by the spirituality of the medieval Moldavians to create one of the most unique styles of church-architecture in the world. Image Moldavians trace their descent to Maramureș in NW Transylvania, where there is a millennium long tradition of wooden churches.
The major Gothic element of Moldavian architecture must be understood as a continuation of this style. Pay attention to the spire and roof. Image

Gothic Architecture in Romania, a🧵

Transylvania represents the eastern-most point of infiltration of the Gothic style of architecture in medieval Europe -- join me for a look at its most representative edifices. Image The Black Church of Brasov is the largest Gothic edifice in South-Eastern Europe, and was "the largest church between Vienna and Instanbul" when it was built between 1383-1477.

Its walls darkened from soot during the 1689 fire, thus giving it its nickname.

Part 2 of Cioran's essay about France, a bitter requiem for its decline and fall:

Decadence means collective lucidity: a soul reaching its expiration date.

There will also be a third part to this translation.
I originally planned to make it a two part, but Cioran is exceptionally lyrical in this essay, and I think that tradeoff is worth it for a better translation.shorturl.at/adorH

Mircea Eliade on renunciation, ascesis, and virility
A 🧵 in translation

My words will be few. Now, I gaze upon peaks untouched by human hands. Image Do you know the mountain where the worthy man, one who peered inside his soul, is ending his life, alone? Do you know that willed loneliness, complete loneliness, loneliness without the hope of respite? Image

Mircea Eliade on sex, virility, and femininity.
A 🧵in translation

For the gentlemen which demeaned, compromised, vitiated, gangrened the potencies of the sex; for the ladies which exalted and contributed to the rooting of eternal mediocrity in the male, I write these words. Image Don Juan doesn’t embody the essence of virility. One who wastes his life collecting women, shows that he values them more than they are worth. The restlessness and thirst of Don Juans is mediocre. They have refused to gather and glorify the whole in a single loving body and soul. Image
