1. Brief thread about Nuremberg and an error in the Transit Costs Project database. 2. Herbert from my comments section had sent me pics from the Nuremberg transit museum, and the costs looked abnormally low.

@AlecStapp This quote is completely fraudulent, FYI. @AlecStapp The line about Japanese bankruptcy is false; there was a bailout but only of low-speed lines, not Shinkansen.

1. @DavidAFrench has a good dissection of the Christendom-Christianity tension; to this I want to add context of the Putinist Bundeswehr. 2. The head of the navy until he was made to resign in January, Kay-Achim Schönbach, justified his support of Putin by his own Christianity.

Let's do it. AMA; questions about the story are welcome as are questions about how it relates to my real work, to Ukraine, etc. Originally that was the point: to figure out invasion literature. But as it developed the story has gotten way bigger.

1. Thread. But I also want to add a few more notes re the S-Bahn model. 2. The S-Bahn is distinct from RegionalBahn - it's urban rail on mainline track, rather than interurban rail (though Zurich is both).

1. Brief thread on some state capacity issues, coming from @KlingBlog's article here: nationalaffairs.com/publications/d… @KlingBlog 2. So, first, as a historical nitpick, its story of property ambiguity has two mistakes, one random and one systemic.

In NRW, SPD says if it wins the election it will raise primary and vocational teacher salaries to match Gymnasium. sueddeutsche.de/service/jahres… We have two separate scales, A13 for Gymnasium teachers and A12 for the rest. A13 earns 15% more. oeffentlichen-dienst.de/alles-wichtige…

Play LARPs: it's fun and Xi Jinping thinks it's bad so it's win-win. The biggest LARP culture is in Russia and judging by the one LARP that made it to the US, Prison, it's very subversive.

And Democrats will ignore lack of progress on immigration reform and prescribe even more nativism. (Because immigrants rarely go into politics and thus party elites are not surrounded by us and disinterpret our opinions.)

1. Thread about Torah Nuclei (or Torah Clusters?) in Israel and their role in the ongoing domestic Jewish vs. Arab rioting. 2. I and other Israeli leftists sometimes call them settlers-in-Israel-Proper, which sounds weird since Israel really isn't the settlements.

That's Yad2. Sure, I was just pointing them out for their ads mocking settlers as people who take other people's stuff.

Thread about the one-day Arab strike in protest of the violence and the state's siding with Jewish pogromchiks. Summary:
1. The strike was strongly felt, e.g. 10% of bus drivers participated, leading to hundreds of canceled buses.

The problem with this is that it gives money to Amtrak, which cannot build or run trains. Amtrak is an obstacle to good passenger rail in the United States. It is a technological MAGA, an attempt to revive the 1950s.

In the interest of fair disclosure: Dallas-OKC-Tulsa returns 1.9% if you believe my model, it's just too risky for the map. The problem is that all cities in question are sprawly and decentralized, and at a distance where the competition is cars, not planes.

Hmmm. There's no rule of thumb here - cities here are smol, there's just so many of them. At $25m/km (little to no tunneling), you want 7.7 million p-km/route-km, so the product of 2 metro populations should be 58 million.

Getting feted by their friends. Officious speeches about values are as useful as "your mother is ashamed of you" to a disowned queer. "Your mother is ashamed of you" is a good anti-crime tactic. I've read articles about its successes in community policing, e.g. in Hawaii.

Very much this. It's critical to understand how countries (Italy) can be competent at one thing (infra) and suck at another (corona). People I respect speak of the construction cost crisis as one of Western failure vs. Asian success, like corona - but that's incorrect.

I'm actually happy to see still-high deaths in Germany, because it means that falling new cases is real and not just a reporting trend. When you have periods of low reporting, like weekends or holidays, new cases and deaths fall together (check Christmas, or US Thanksgiving).

The people who have a "by any means necessary" reaction to one death suddenly turn into procedure hawks at 1,000 daily deaths. If we think Europe and the US are dying out of arrogant unwillingness to learn from Asia, it follows that cultural intervention is required.

In Israel, the number of new infections has fallen by a factor of 4.5 in 15 days. That's with a lockdown, not much centralized quarantining. Imagine we had this. There might be a week-long plateau, as Israel had in the first week of October, during the transition.
