happy new year, all. i’ve barely had time to absorb new music or artists in 2020, because mostly i’ve been listening with ash, and all he wants is the Grease soundtrack over and over (and over. and over). but here’s a little list of my top ten. ready? 1. Fiona Apple - Fetch The Bolt Cutters
In Three Words: homespun percussive truth-bangers
For Fans Of: feminism, confessional lyrics
Note: not background listening

AVOCADO THEORY, a thread.
a few years ago, a vegan friend of mine told me a story.
she'd written a post about veganism on facebook, and one of her best friends posted a comment about how vegans were short-sighted & selfish because their avocado consumption was killing the planet. the upshot: after multiple fiery back-and-forths, they canceled their friendship. my vegan pal had been the maid of honor at her friend's wedding. because of the fiery facebook exchange: bam. done. friendship over forever. a full canceling. to my knowledge, they never rekindled.

i’ve been shamed & told to “just. stop.”, etc a few times lately for continuing to promote my patreon (and work) here on twitter.

this is important, so hear me out.
this is not just about me but about all the other artists who are out there, reading & watching. {thread...) many artists are just small businesses. when people tell me “but amanda people are literally starving so shut up and stop asking for money for your art”, i wonder if those people consider my staff, who don’t get paid unless my patreon stays afloat.

i wanted to say something about patronage. there’s never an obvious time to say this stuff, but it’s important.

yesterday i wrote a song.
i have been in a foreign country in an air bnb, because COVID, single-momming a 4-year old, for 2 months.

creating has been hard. like a lot of artists right now, especially those with kids, i’ve been struggling to get into the Work Flow; and especially struggling to find time & headspace to write and record new material, even though i’m nursing a broken heart and my head is overflowing with musical ideas.

the guardian’s music editor snubbed the most feminist album and tour of my career, and you’ll never believe what happened next...

(or: how to fight clickbait - and other stuff - using patronage.)

{thread. please RT this one. i thank you.}

photo: @gmotophotos when i started this album cycle for THERE WILL BE NO INTERMISSION, i was told by my publicists that the guardian wouldn't cover the new record or even announce the tour dates. this was shocking; the guardian has been a career-long ally. i was busy and didn't dig into reasons why.

{thread + discussion} i’m leaving for the next leg of my global tour today. in london about to board a train to the netherlands for the first show (sold out amsterdam, hooray!) but what’s on my mind right now is crowdfunding, and i want to talk about it for a second if it’s ok. yesterday, i did five phone interviews, and most of the journalists had read my twitter feed. earlier in the day, a random woman had told me (via tweet) that i was tone-deaf for asking people to fund my fabulous lifestyle on patreon when real people had real bills to pay. *sigh*

{thread} we were late to the london premiere of good omens because @neilhimself does not know how to tie a bow-tie. nor would he attend the premiere without a bow-tie. we were at a standstill. i didn’t know how to tie a bow-tie. neil’s agent didn’t know how to tie a bow-tie.(1/4) neil’s assistant didn’t know how to tie a bow-tie. nobody working at the hotel knew how to tie a bow-tie. neil’s publicist did not know how to tie a bow-tie even after frantically googling a youtube instructional video. the hotel concierge, seeing neil’s desperation, began..(2/4)

this is a hard thread to write.

i am on a plane bound for chicago, then i fly to st. paul, where i will sit in giant theaters & tell several thousand people (spoiler, sorry) each night about my abortions.

yes, abortions.

plural.

i’ve had three.

motherjones.com/politics/2019/… one when i was 17. and two in my thirties, after i got married.

in none of these cases was i raped. in one case, the fetus wasn’t viable. in the other two: i chose.

i wasn’t ready.

in each case (in massachusetts, edinburgh and NYC) i had access to a safe, legal abortion.
