This wonderfully captures of what our neighborhood learned in the 90s. I'd only heard bits of this from my tentative conversations with neighbors who had been around for the attack (or the NYPD riot in Tompkins), or what I picked up from Sante's pieces when I worked at the Voice. I don't think I'd realize how much my world view was shaped by having the defining years of my early adulthood be surrounded by people who were persecuted for coming together as a community, building better lives for themselves, and protecting a vibrant and vital culture.

We have invented: a computer that is bad at math. We put the best minds in the industry in it, and spent billions of dollars, plus we misused the public commons in all kinds of unexpected and unspeakable ways. But ultimately, we triumphed. Computer bad at math.

We need a term for something beyond “tragedy of the commons” when the extractive platforms try to kill off the sources they depend on to feed their models in the first place. The same thing the gig economy tries to do to workers, and equally short-sighted. Part of the reason AI should be trained only on data given with consent is so that you can possibly go back to those sources again in the future. Every creator and problem-solver who has had their brilliance strip mined for this generation of AI will not let it happen again.

This is an astute analysis of where capital is at in tech right now, and focuses on founders/CEOs, but it explains why the capital class is also so focused on punishing workers right now. They really want to take out their frustrations with founders by targeting workers. It’s tied closely to this cycle.

All other things aside, the fact that he clearly doesn’t know how to use GitHub or Slack is such outrageously funny boomer energy. Fully in keeping with “print out your code” and “I am constantly getting duped by obviously fake bullshit online”. My man is cosplaying CEO by pasting screenshots into Microsoft Word documents formatted with Comic Sans. We’re a couple days away from him emailing everyone “FW: FW: fw: CAREFUL! Fentanyl in Halloween candy!”

A ton of really great points in this thread (and importantly — these are representative, none of these concerns are new for any of the marginalized people who’ve been in fediverse communities) and the urgency of solving these problems is just going up as Twitter flails. There is a huge opportunity (I mean culturally, I don’t think this should be another get-rich-quick scam) in addressing these needs at scale. The answer may well be in something like Tumblr allowing you to follow federated accounts, or a co-op running a larger platform.

It’s true, I’m trying to censor recognition for Davy Crockett. And it’s *working*. Kids today don’t wear raccoon hats, that’s another woke victory.

Today, at @Fastly + @Glitch, our team is launching something pretty extraordinary: Fast Forward ⏩ It’s real, meaningful support for the people and communities that are building a better internet. fastly.com/forward As @haubles_ & @crucially lay out here, Fast Forward is “a set of programs designed to empower and support developers, open source projects, and nonprofits that share our vision of an internet that is free, open, and safe for all.” fastly.com/blog/fast-forw…

Congratulations to activists, who apparently, with zero funding and no institutional support, can engage dozens of multi-billion-dollar publicly traded companies and influence their spend on tens of millions of dollars in a matter of days, when billionaire tycoons can't. Hardest part was getting the CTO of Antifa to set up a shared Slack channel with Unilever’s digital marketing strategy team. Anyway, if you’re still advertising with Twitter, it’s a great time to push for some steep discounts, as they’re going to be frantic to hold onto accounts.

🤣 literally nothing cuts right to the heart of rightwing insecurity more than a handful of blue pixels. they cannot *stand* not having it just be tied to money, even though it's completely meaningless. exactly like all their media being propped up by ads for little blue pills. This is just the latest in a years-long trend of Twitter leadership not understanding what verification is, and being manipulated by insecure rightwing media dudes' obsessions with the signal. anildash.com/2021/05/20/ver… A logo you buy is not the same thing as an account being legit.

i get that this is meant to be cute or even supportive, but... let's not do this Facebook was a direct enabler of the Rohingya genocide. I _would_ fully support giving over control of the company to representatives of the Rohingya community. amnesty.org/en/latest/news…

A lot of people are engaging with this tweet. (For the record, doing admin tasks when in a non-administrative role only benefits those with backgrounds where that's seen as "taking initiative" rather than "they're the help".) But let's look deeper… Hey look, here's @sacca's tweet from... three years ago. Same content, reaching the same "haha, isn't twittter funny" conclusion about giving note-taking advice. This is probably the tweet (and engagement) that was being copied.

It’s technically interesting, but if there’s already a dependency on DNS, why introduce an additional dependency on DIDs? Not sure how that comports with stated design goals for the protocol, and just repeats patterns from more well-established decentralized protocols. The repo & Lexicon schematic are pretty good (as @jackyalcine notes, they obviously learn a lot from the many prior attempts at this work) and it’s not overly plagued by “web3” bullshit. But the “algorithmic choice” part feels like wankery that’s mostly there to appease Jack.

It wonderful that @JanetJackson’s Deluxe Edition of Velvet Rope is out — the remixes & b-sides from this era are among the greatest of her career. Tony Moran’s 12” club mix of Together Again elevates the dancing-through-the-heartbreak of the original track to another level, especially the choir vocals on the last 2 minutes of the 11-minute ride. music.apple.com/us/album/toget… open.spotify.com/track/5O5DJLcJ…

Any story like this NYT piece which refers to “Asian American parents” can 100% be disregarded due to being intentional misreporting based on being gamed by a small cohort of parents who don’t represent most of us who want more equitable schools. Another tell is when they describe an extremist org like PLACE as being about education without mentioning that they push the CRT scaremongering lie, and have a board which includes zero teachers or Black parents — but does include a career cop with multiple abuse complaints.

If you’d like to know how welcoming YCombinator’s culture is, here’s a hint. (I’ve never said a rude word to Tan, though I think he’s wrong as hell about a lot of things, and he’s cited my work dating all the way back to the blogging startup he did 14 years ago.) 🤷🏾‍♂️ Image For what it’s worth, I *do* think he is one of the most YC people in the whole industry. That is correct.

If you click a link in your Instagram or Facebook app, Meta (Facebook) actually modifies the pages you’re reading so that it can track every single thing you do on those sites. From 2019, “Link In Bio “ is a slow knife:

The Tornado Cash service, which is built to obscure financial transactions, was shut down due to U.S. sanctions as it was being used to enable funding of DPRK attacks. The various responses from uncritical crypto advocates are telling, given how feeble and thoughtless they are... For example, virtually none of the responses offered suggestions of how to build accountable systems. There's an outright refusal to consider a goal of "make it possible to stop funding those who will cause violent harm to others". Is all such violence acceptable, then?
