TV reporters going live have 3 means to track if they’re on/off air:
-Floor monitor/screen
-Earpiece
-On-site coordinator (producer/tech crew)

Sometimes you had them all, sometimes just one. But losing them can spell disaster for the report.

A floor monitor works best for ongoing/breaking events—the reporter not only sees if they’re on screen, but also what video they’re annotating/talking over.

You’d get one w/ a production van, having a generator & extra crews. But these days, smaller live teams don’t bring any. Image

Why audiences, not legislators or govt regulations, should decide the fate of media: a thread--

2004. ABS-CBN 2 lost viewers to GMA7 in Mega Manila primetime ratings.

Various reasons. Some no longer liked the news. Others found telefantasyas & a local reality challenge better. Elsewhere, the TV signal was just bad. And any counterprogramming just seemed like poor knockoffs.

ABS-CBN had to admit loss & take stock of how it did things. Programmers returned to their strength, drama; journalists, relating to their audience & telling stories better.
