Here I am about to defend Kristen Stewart, the star of my favourite hate-watch movies. This is what it has come to:

First things first, Kristen does not use the term queer ONCE in this piece. That term is used only by the writer.

What Kristen does express, repeatedly, is her love of the female body, female sexuality, the female experience, and her desire to explore all of this through her work.

She talks at length about her relationship with her own femaleness – her early performance of femininity in order to be accepted and desired by peers, and her new understanding that, whilst there is nothing at all wrong with femininity, doors open more easily for the stereotypically feminine woman than the un-feminine.

“I never have felt like I have performed a femininity in order to reap its benefits in a way that felt like a lie,” she continues. “I’m very fluid, and I’ve never felt like, ‘Oh, wow, I was doing this lie for a long time in order to get jobs.’ That would be wrong. I have had a good time playing with all of the tonal qualities. But there’s so much room for success when you choose the girlie one. There’s no room for this other one.” Now wiser and freer, Kristen sets out to be subversive in all her work, particularly when it comes to sex stereotypes.

“[…]she also knows the misogyny embedded in the system and that she could make something subversive and beautiful and true if only she were given the chance. “And it makes me fucking angry. And not in a way that’s like, ‘I’ve been doing this for so long, and so therefore I deserve it.’ It’s really more like, ‘If I were a man, you would fucking believe me!’”

More waxing lyrical about the female body and experience:

“The coolest fucking part of us is that we have this ever-present and unclosable opening, and we’re walking around with it all the time, and we sort of pretend like it’s not there, but it’s our greatest strength”.Image
