My last story for Rolling Stone is up today. It's a profile of Michael van Landingham, the CIA analyst who drafted the 2017 intelligence community assessment that concluded Russia meddled in order to help Trump. rollingstone.com/politics/polit… Some excerpts: Russian intelligence tried to spear phish the personal email of one of the analysts who later worked on the 2017 assessment using the same email lure Podesta got (the one published in the WikiLeaks dump in October 2016).

Meta found a Chinese troll network hiring anti-Soros protesters, setting up a fake company in London, and shitposting anti-immigrant takes in an apparent (lame) attempt to stir up division in the west. So naturally I applied. They're hiring, folks. rollingstone.com/politics/polit… Image I also sent them an old website of mine with clips of my work. The fun thing about websites, especially old ones that no one clicks on anymore, is that it's really obvious who's clicking on them and where they're located if you line up the "last seen" time with your traffic logs

This is a question I get a lot in different versions and it's worth explaining. Iranian crates do have a vaguely American air to them. They're in English. Formatted with the same date style. Why? A lot of it has to do with the fact that, pre-revolution, Iran's biggest arms supplier was the US and Iran just hasn't bothered to change some things.

Ukraine is turning the tables on Russia and firing Iranian ammo at its tormentors after months of being struck by Iranian drones. Unclear where it’s coming from. rollingstone.com/politics/polit… @CalibreObscura // @UAWeapons spotted the most recent example: 125mm ammo produced in ~December 2022 showed up in the hands of Ukrainian forces recently. Other examples spotted by them include 120mm mortars, 122mm rockets/artillery.

New from me: when the Jan 6 committee wanted to test TikTok’s potential for extremist content rabbitholes, they gave an account to a fictional 41 year old woman. It took 75 mins for the account to be served videos with Nazi content rollingstone.com/politics/polit… The incident is highlighted in an unpublished summary of investigative findings written by the Jan 6 committee staff.

Christ what a lazy fucking moron this guy is. That’s my article. I published all of the handles on Twitter the day the story ran. You can look up the user IDs on any website, like this one. But yeah, super spooky much overreach, my dude. tweeterid.com
Image Here’s my Twitter thread laying out in punitive detail all the info that apparently the FBI was, like Taibbi, just too goddamned lazy to check my twitter feed for

New from me: Graphika and @stanfordio found a network of accounts linked to the Russian troll factory on Truth Social, Gettr, and Gab. Their most successful posts came from Kid Rock impersonators who got Donald Trump Jr. to repost their content. rollingstone.com/politics/polit… @stanfordio The accounts, 35 in total, engaged in a “deliberate effort to capitalize on public concerns about foreign interference in U.S. elections,” according to Graphika and Stanford researchers.

New from me. In an internal investigation, Twitter concludes that a network of trolls linked to the Chinese government was behind some of the harassment of women reporters critical of the PRC. rollingstone.com/culture/cultur… One of the targets of that harassment, @xu_xiuzhong, a reporter and researcher at @ASPI_org who faced waves of obscene harassment over her work on China and Xinjiang. Twitter had planned to publicly disclose the findings but it’s doubtful now that will ever happen.

TruthSocial was (oddly) the number one download in the Play Store today and it's still a ghost down. For comparison, Parler is number 422 and that's 422 within the social category. Parler has been smarter about rebuilding though. Lest we forget, after AWS booted them they had to go hunting for cloud services with DDoS Guard, the Russian DDoS protection of choice for Hamas, 8kun, etc.

Iranian telegram channels showing pics of IRGC in cities for crowd control following protests over the death of Mahsa Amini. These are the same kind of 40mm grenades that tend to lodge in people's skulls because they're heavier than comparable "less than lethal" 40mm munitions. ImageImage More on them here

New from me: There’s Something Fishy Happening Between Gab and a Far-Right GOP Candidate
rollingstone.com/politics/polit… This is a bit of a thread. Remember when Media Matters found out that Doug Mastriano was paying Gab for "consulting"? Me too. @letsgomathias had an interesting followup on that. Turns out Gab was making new accounts automatically follow Mastriano's account.

Someone put together a video montage of all the weapons people have declared obsolete since February mulching armies. It’s a cousin of Main Character Syndrome, the belief that this current time period is special above and beyond others and so now must be the era when Everything Changes because we, who are equally special, inhabit it.

Feds seem to be cracking down on these violence-for-hire forums related to crypto forums and the username goobers. Obviously, violence > threats of violence in terms of severity and meriting investigative resources but one wonders whether we'll ever see a KiwiFarms-adjacent investigation. Forum itself/owner is probably fine but it does seem to be a prominent hub for communicating threats.
