1. What Wente fails to acknowledge is that the definition of merit in academia (dollars earned, patents filed, articles published) is not objective. It is a subjective measure defined by and for Western white males who take a traditional, linear trajectory through their careers.

2. Research by Indigenous colleagues often requires, by its very nature, extensive relationship building w communities, and collaboration with nonAcademics. The outcomes may be publications, but policy changes, development of new programs, etc. can be equally or more impactful.
