I just told my husb that women couldn't even get a credit card w/o a male signature until 1974, and he was incredulous. And they want it back. And this messaging has been passed down generationally.

A little Friday night info about how authors earn money bc I think the public at large doesn't get how it breaks down for the average writer. Authors are given advances when they sell a book: a chunk of money based on a variety of things that the pub house determines. When I first started out, advances were healthy - many at least 50k+, many were higher. Over the yrs, for new and midlist authors, this number diminished. But for math, let's say an author is given a 40k advance. She pays her agent 15% of this. She is paid this in 2-3 increments.
