Been thinking on the comments this morning I heard that the total hog losses and reduction in herd size is not as important as the losses in sows and piglets. Lots of assumptions in this so lets get them out of the way first. /1
Sow losses are around 60% across all farms. Estimate that this is 15 million sows. Current sows at large farms were ~6 million per MARA. So we can assume that 4 million sows are on smaller than 5,000 head piggeries or in dedicated sow "farms". /2

or be raised hormone free. Coles beef is sourced from HGP free cattle as is the beef exported to China. HGP improves the weight gain for cattle on feed significantly and can be the difference between profit and loss in a feedlot. Cow has the designation * A * to distinguish it
