Ukraine says it has regained control of “the whole Kyiv region” after Russian forces retreated from key towns near the Ukrainian capital. Evacuation efforts from the besieged port city of Mariupol will continue on Sunday.
According to the UN refugee agency’s data portal, more than 4.1 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion. Many have sought refuge in Poland and other neighbouring states.

March 8, 2022 - Russia's offensive in Ukraine continued but at a significantly slower pace as Moscow warned the West that bans on its energy exports would lead to a “catastrophic” rise in the oil price to $300 a barrel.

Several Ukrainian cities remain under siege conditions, with the southern city of Mariupol hardest hit. Encircled by Russian forces for almost a week, the city is facing shortages of water, electricity, food and medicines, per Ukrainian and UN aid officials.
