1/ European diplomats believe that in the new geopolitics the US foreign policy establishment is pushing of geopolitical competition with China, democracy narratives are unhelpful with the swing states in the Global South. However, they are very helpful to Biden domestically… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… 2/ Decarbonisation is also a mining process. This means the new geopolitics emerging will come to be defined by how the Global West and China build their planetary mines — extractive webs of deals and interests — in relations with the states of the Global South. Tenor of Ukraine nuclear debate in DC: consensus Putin would use nuclear weapons to stop a regime threatening rout — expulsion from annexed territories. But no agreement on which territories. One view, it’s close, the loss of Kherson. Another, it’s far, loss of Donetsk or Crimea. Tenor of Ukraine nuclear debate in DC: one view is that facing a rout Putin would start “traditionally” with signalling, tests, into low yield battlefield nuclear bombs. Another that he could go straight to a city or regime decapitation explosion to force immediate surrender.

Dunking American blue ticks are incapable of reacting in a sane way to what I write about Monarchy because their ability to see nuance is irreparably damaged by hyper polarisation. Idea you could argue Royalty is in steep decline and still on balance best for us is beyond them. Image In their own post-Trump society, sadly, a take no quarter, no both sides approach is probably for the best. Democracy really is in danger. Sadly applying that to foreign countries and issues as removed from their context as the death of the Queen produces bilge.

Worth noting that that Gabon and Togo, two former French Colonies, both joined the Commonwealth in 2022. This is because seem from these nations it is not a relationship with Royals but a very useful summit with UK, India, Canada, Australia, South Africa and Anglophone Africa. The Commonwealth is caricatured by a few British supporters and skeptics as something it isn’t. In a world where leaders rotate between summits it offers privileged access to a lot of wealthy and powerful states leaderships with its summit to weak states.

George Orwell on Monarchy:

“The function of the King in promoting stability and acting as a sort of keystone in a non-democratic society is, of course, obvious. But he also has or can have, the function of acting as an escape-valve for dangerous emotions.” “A French journalist said to me once that the monarchy was one of the things that have saved Britain from Fascism.”

The Queen engaged in leader-to-leader diplomacy, offering, little visible engagement with non-Western culture.

The King, in contrast, threw himself into deep engagement with Islam during the era the American media was trumpeting the neo-colonialist Iraq and Afghan war. King Charles III made his opposition to the war in Iraq and his sympathy for the Palestinian cause clearly known through the last few decades. He has also told ministers how uncomfortable he is with continued arms sales to the region. middleeasteye.net/news/prince-ch…

1/ I’d like to share in my reply an account from Clement Attlee, the Prime Minister who achieved more socialistic advance — the NHS, or granting Indian independence — than any of these American leftists can dream of on why he believed constitutional monarchy was best for Britain. 2/ “The most stable and successful republic is that of the United States, and Americans are currently supposed to be most critical of what they call ‘This King Business.’ Yet America is really more monarchical than Britain.”
