I think I've always had mixed feelings about twitter because on the one hand, this site has been essential and formative for me to figure out everything related to ADHD and autism and not feel alone doing it. I've truly found some amazing people on here. On the hand, being extremely exposed to all the currents of twitter was something I never expected and there's been many periods where it's been very overwhelming as an autistic person. But that's helped me grow as person as well, as I still navigate all of it imperfectly.

I feel like people don't talk enough about how activism, advocacy or just trying to make a difference in the world is exhausting and takes so much mental resilience. I just don't know if I have it in me anymore. Maybe I can only make a difference in small ways now Think I've just got to get to a better place before I can really do the things I want to do

When an autistic person believes in their own personal truth, we become unstoppable.

The problem is that sometimes we really ought to be stopped as well.

I think autistic people kind of have to grapple because we do have to make conscious decisions about this if we can Like on the one hand I truly think that the autistic belief in truth and candour can be a source of strength but often this is traumatised out of us. But on the other our wilful pursuit of what we believe can often ignore the people who get in our way, even unintentionally

The main reason the standards for autistic girls are too harsh is that the standards for men in general (including allistics) are too lax. Men and boys are truly allowed to get away with too much imo and it becomes weaponised incompetence That being said - I get why this is rude but I'm not sure that it's immediately obvious to the autistic person that he is being rude per se. This is why functioning or even support levels aren't particularly useful in understanding autistic behaviour

I think I'm getting better at navigating miscommunication even on here and what helps me as an autistic person is:

1) knowing that people don't have to understand me perfectly or precisely

2) that communication *involves* miscommunication and course correction At least for me I find that communication can be overwhelming because as an autistic person I'm more sensitive to what constitutes a misunderstanding because I have higher expectations of precision in meaning (which are entirely internal and unique to an individual)

Wow its bad timing that twitter is dying because I'm finally cracking the code of neurotypical double speak (at work especially)

And let me tell you it is nauseating Well to do anyway but it is important in some ways because I've learnt trust doesnt work the way I want it to at work and that work is just easier when you smooth things over socially

It turns out when you are working you are always socialising (by autistic standards)

ADHD and capitalism: first off, I wanna say that there are a lot more questions we need to ask and less certain answers but it's certainly unhelpful if anticapitalist theories lead to broad generalisations that dismiss the perspectives of those it's supposed to help

1/
There are numerous problems with "ADHD only exists/you only need ADHD meds under capitalism" takes and it keeps coming up so let's first of all note the complexity of the issue and how reductive this take is.

Nothing is quite as frustrating as imprecise analysis; nothing quite leads to imprecise analysis like the term "capitalism" Generally speaking it's a bit more useful imo to identify the dimensions of capitalism we're talking about or at least have an idea of what we mean by capitalism but there really should be an understanding that what capitalism entails is subject to a wide range of interpretations

Im confused why people even think the donnie yen tweet is something worth reacting to, kind of feel like there are cultural differences at play here. It's an extremely Chinese thing to judge people based on their jobs lol Is it even a real donnie yen account

Thinking about autistic meltdowns especially in teens and adults: in my experience of having and seeing meltdowns, I personally find that most of them happen when autistic people cannot reconcile expectations, be it their own or other people's Like for example I have a lot of meltdowns about time because I believe people expect me to be there on time and I expect myself to meet deadlines or be on time as matter of moral duty and I get very frustrated trying to reconcile events that throw timelines off

Does anyone ever think about or researched about the selection/survivorship bias of diagnostic processes that are then used to reinforce certain findings about the diagnosed individuals?

E.g. It feels like comorbidity is the norm because this is a factor that leads to diagnosis Like I feel like the autistic community is actually burdened by the history of its diagnostic criteria because the older definitions don't distinguish between the multiple conditions that cluster together and form the classic definition/archetype of autism

Thread on ADHD meds when you're also autistic?

Thought I'd share my experience after being on meds for three years because my experience of meds seem to differ a little from ADHDers. I'd be curious to compare experiences with other ADHDers and autistic people.

1/
First off, meds don't seem to work as well for us so to speak. Whenever I hear ADHDers talk about meds it sounds like everything gets better and they describe it like putting on glasses. I've heard it helps memory, mood balance and executive functioning etc.

One thing people need to understand about conversations wrt cultural appropriation is that there a few different political positions that underlie it: essentially it is about culture as commodity and how you view this concept is going to affect how you think about appropriation Obviously if you don't think there's anything wrong with commodifying most things (which obviously is quite a common position) then you're not going to see any problems with most forms of commodification of culture

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that this news is shocking when every teacher I know looks like this Xenomorph from Alien with his head beween his hands/knees, l Some of this is on me for having poor boundaries but I was getting to work at 645 and leaving at 6pm on average for the first three years of teaching in a mainstream school, then taking marking and lesson preparation home to do.

I'm gonna sit down and actually read the study but I'm already pissed off that they started it with Harlem by Langston Hughes Have read through the study: there are admittedly more nuances than is reported in the article (e.g. I was wondering about the relationship to SBB); there are more explicit comparisons between races and outcomes and analysis of racism than is mentioned in the article

Legit - I am so annoyed by quantitive studies in education because people are so badly at framing the data. We tend to have similar issues with psych. So often the questions you ask in studies are the wrong questions to begin with. Basically, any study you do on the education system is already data skewed by data because educational outcomes are the result of academic results. You need to consider how the two forms of data intersect and interact. There is a serious chicken-egg problem here.

The study of overrepresentation of Maly students in Normal Technical stream has me screaming because they identified a lot of accurate reasons for why students end up in NT but there is no examination of the relationship to race and consequently you racialise those reasons You didn't do the thing you said you were gonna do! Every single reason there is an accurate reason for ending up in NT but why is it that when those same factors apply to Chinese students, they don't end up in the NT stream as frequently?

CW: some discussion of behavioral approaches

I feel like we are so far from describing a neurodivergent pedagogy but in particular we need to talk about autistic pedagogy because I feel like behavioural approaches completely subsume other pedagogical approaches and concerns To me, there's actually quite a distinct learning profile for autistic children/teens and they have very specific tendencies wrt school work, learning and examinations - I feel like most approaches do not consider this at all even though the patterns are obvious.
