Bravo. Today, @TJCommission began publicly reporting individual hospitals' C-section rates.

“By identifying hospitals with consistently high cesarean rates, The Joint Commission aims to encourage leaders to... safely reduce their rates,” said David Baker.
jointcommission.org/resources/news… @TJCommission 5 years ago, I asked 24 big maternity centers to disclose their NTSV C-section rates; 20 did.

4 had rates >30%. All have since improved: @InovaFairfax from 39% to 33%, @NorthwellHealth North Shore Univ Hosp from 34% to 30%. @BayCare St. Joseph's & @TriHealth Good Sam now <30%.

Two noteworthy findings by Wang @rkwadhera @DLBHATTMD in @JAMACardio:
1) Hospitals in the @usnews top 50 have better mortality rates than other hospitals in AMI, CABG & HF. Better HCAHPS, too. Not too surprising, but certainly reassuring.

2) But those same top hospitals do no better than others on readmission.

Why? Well, we have to ask ourselves whether readmission is a valid indicator of quality. And if it is, is it valid in all patient cohorts, or only certain ones?
