Trump v. Slaughter will have major implications for the future of AI regulation. If you want a federal body that can independently assess frontier models and then impose binding consequences - free from political or partisan influence -- that just got a lot harder, if not impossible. Imagine Congress creates a Frontier AI Commission that can license major training runs, compel evaluations, restrict deployments, order emergency pauses, or impose penalties. Under today’s decision, its leaders could not be protected from presidential removal.

My uncle Av passed away last weekend. He was a wonderful uncle and he had an extraordinary career. He transformed ABC World News Tonight and built 20/20, back when broadcast news meant something very different from the 24 hr news cycle. nytimes.com/2022/03/18/bus… I was too young to see his professional life firsthand, but his colleagues remembered him as a brilliant newsman and an inspirational manager, even decades after he retired.

FTC announced a new data security settlement today, one of the first under Khan's admin. The order has a couple new provisions that FTC watchers will want to look at closely. ftc.gov/news-events/ne… First, CafePress is banned from authenticating users via security questions (like, what's your mother's maiden name or what's your favorite pizza topping), and needs to use multi-factor authentication instead.
