yesterday my daughter sent a text about a suicide that i can’t stop thinking about. having lost 2 family members to suicide, i hope by talking about it, maybe it will make someone change their mind and decide to choose life. i’ll give y’all 10 min to mute before i finish the 🧵
so here is the text i can’t get out of my head. this event happened at the hospital my daughter works at, with ED being the emergency department.

In 2018, FL voters approved Marsy’s law, part of which prevents victim information that could be used to find and harass victims from being publicly released. Cops who kill people have used Marsy’s law to shield their identities, claiming they’re victims of the person they shot.
For example, cops doing training undercover saw a “suspicious” car and called Target, learning of a theft. Rather than arrest the 2 involved as they exited the store, they let the 2 get in the car. As the car pulled out, cops in unmarked cars blocked it and then shot it up.

today i learned of something worse than a geofence warrant (a warrant that identifies all phones in a specific area during a specific timeframe): a keyword warrant. what's a keyword warrant? one where police ask google to provide info on anyone who searched for a specific keyword
i haven't seen anything like this in my time as a PD, but investigative tactics like this tend to spread like a virus. warrants are supposed to be specific: generally there's a suspect and the warrant lays out the place to be searched and items seized based on probable cause.
