I am currently active in the Chinese EV market and have been for a while. I would like to share some lessons I have learned to help anyone interested in importing cars from China. I am typing this in real time, so this will likely be a long thread. 🧵 The usual caveat: I am not an importer or a car dealer, and I am not doing this to sell cars. Please do not come to my DMs to buy a vehicle. I am simply sharing information that people might find useful so they can avoid costly financial mistakes.

💀😬

It took 2 years, but this isn't just a homelab anymore. It’s a production-ready Kubernetes data center running in my house.

Hybrid nodes, enterprise storage, automated secrets, & fully GitOps-driven

See the code that runs it: github.com/bigbrovar/krak… #selfhosted #k8s #iac x.com/bigbrovar/stat…Image

Hybrid Architecture:
Home Lab is made up of HP Minis (x86), Raspberry Pis (ARM64), and 2 VMs across different hypervisors.
Bare-metal nodes spun up via PXE boot + Debian preseed, VMs built with Terraform.
Everything was Automated. Zero manual setup.

More on this project. It is meant to power my new location which lead to an increased energy needs - 5 AC, 3 water Heaters, an electric oven, Induction cooker, Microwave, freezers - whole shebang -All of powered from Solar. I will be sharing this journey from start to finish. Image

The goal of sharing all these is to showcase how much renewable energy tech and capabilities have improved and share what a well planned and executed off-grid solar project look like. This is by far the biggest DIY project I have ever embarked on and glad to share all I learned.

Spent some time this week to improve the electrical earthing of the house.
Earthing is one of the most important components of any home, unfortunately it is often the most incompetently installed.
The Job of Electrical earth is to provide a safe path for "rogue" electricity. 🧵 What do I mean by "rogue" this is my made up word to explain things like electrical leakage (from a faulty appliance) or transient voltage surge from a near by lightning strike, it could also be over voltage from the grid.

Lithium batteries. The best Lithium based battery for home use are Lithium ion Phosphate aka LifePo4. They are very stable and safe. Although the have lesser energy density compared to Lithium Ion Polymer, they are very very safe. Lithium Batteries are ideal for solar off-grid setup because they have non of the disadvantages of traditional Lead Acid Batteries (LA) which you get with your "dry cell" eg AGM, Gel and "wet cell" eg Tubular batteries.

Below are the advantages of Lithium over LA

Easy on paper to get an NHF loan to build or buy a house 5M up to 15M (recently upgraded to 50M) the loan is at a fixed 6% per annum for a period not more than 30yrs with a cut off age of 60.
You pay between 10-30% equity.
Things are a bit different in practice though. Thread. To qualify for the loan, you need to have paid NHF contribution which is 2% of your basic salary for at least 6 months. I think you are allowed to pay this in retro lump sum. You can also pay this voluntarily.

The loan is limited to your salary. And what you can afford.

Let’s do the maths, I would compare the running cost of a generator compared to my current solar setup which powers my house 24/7 in the end we would see which is cheaper. This is a Generator vs Solar cost thread. Lets start this with some ground rules.
My current solar inverter setup runs for 24/7 and has been doing so for over 6 years. I would be comparing this with a similar Generator setup running 14 hours away assuming 10 hours grid electricity.

Exactly 7 years ago. The day I said a big Fuck you to NEPA. Lol
It was a very modest system. 480w solar panels with 5kwh battery.
The system as grown organically from an average daily electricity generation of 1.2kwh to the current average daily of 27kwh. A milestone Thread. The project that lead to me being energy independent started very modest. A system to power just my needs. I was initially going to have someone do it for me.. but I quickly figured it was best to DIY one. Thanks to OCD, I went into a rabbit hole learned about electricity.

If all you listen to is Western Press, you would see Wagner The Russian based Private Military Contractor as incompetent ill-trained bunch of conscripts. Well, the Musicians just won the biggest Urban battle in Europe since world war 2 Stalingrad. Ukraine threw everything to hold Bakhmhut after initially dismissing the town as having little strategic importance. Even after US military advisers recommended a withdrawal, Ukraine held on fantastically. Sending in their elites. Up to 500 replacement a day.

This is why I haven't written a blog post in a long time despite having so many post in my head.

So today decided to write about a pro Bono solar off-grid solar I am designing for a neighbor. It would include design the why if the design and components to be used. But before I start I remembered my ghost cms doesn't have comments installed yet.. so I figured to do that first.. I was going to use disqus then I remembered they were acquired by an evil corp who inserts ads in comments and probably harvests user data ..

Listening to the new DavidO album in my Music room. This is a room engineered to get the best music experience scientifically possible within my budget.

It includes speakers that alhave been scientifically tested to product least distortion and noise. The speakers also have good sound profile. Imaging, good bass presence, clarity & a midrange which is not crowded out.

Speakers are paired with a subwoofer which is designed for music. It is tight, fast & completely invincible.
Speaker is JBL A130 Studio
Subwoofer Emotiva Sub8

Neighbour installed 8 x 300w solar panels some weeks ago but still runs on Gen pretty much all the time even on a sunny day.
Feel so sorry for him.
Amount of scam in the solar industry in NG no be here.
Fake Panels, Fake Batteries, quack installers - sometimes all of the above. So a neighbor (another one) approached me to help him with setting up a solar setup for his house. I don't do this for a living nor do I do this commercially. Have no plans to.

I would be helping him with design of the system, identifying components to use & recommend installer

The project below has been on hiatus mostly due to some technical limitations of running computers on SD cards. Finally found some time to improve on things. Would be using be sharing the journey here.

The end goal is to rebuild the home computer lab from scratch. First part of the new home lab is here so @aadetugbo can stop throwing shade. No more fiddling with arcane command trying the optimize for decent signal to noise ratio of an LTE network. Image

With good energy audit & efficiency an average Nigerian home can be completely off-grid on 2kw solar panels and 5kwh battery system augmented with a 3kw petrol generator (for the low sunlight days)
Such a home would enjoy 24/7 electricity & use less than 40l of petrol in a year. If such a system is connected to the grid, the need for petrol gen becomes even less & the battery would last for close to 4 years.. for a lead acid battery and 15 years for lithium cells.
The catch isn't even money. It is a well designed solar inverter system + efficient usage

Amazon is truly a customer focused company. I just had an experience with them that blew my mind.
I ordered a pair of Jamo S 803 bookshelf speakers. They were meant for an audiophile music room I am setting up. The speakers were shipped to @shipheroshe After some digging I found from reviews that the speaker had a "U" shaped sound signature I decided to return them and get another speaker instead. I triggered the return process for Amazon to pick up the speakers. From the return tracker logs it showed speakers were picked up

If u have the means.. Go on renewable energy. Energy sustainability is 1 of the best thing u can do for urself & fam, it is more rewarding than that expensive car you are thinking to add or upgrade to. not in the solar biz but can help if u want to DIY. Heck let me do a thread First were am I coming from. Am not a physicist nor an electrical engineer so caveats emptor. The desire to generate my own electricity is what got me into renewable energy and I learned just enough to build a system that allows me generate all my energy needs Image
