Justin Verlander's performance last night in leading the Astros to a win over the Yankees reinforced his superb productivity since he joined the club at the trade deadline in 2017. He was 34 years old then and already a surefire Hall of Famer based on time with the Tigers. 1/6 In 34 IP over the remainder of the 2017 regular season, Verlander saved 11 more runs than a league-average pitcher would have saved in the same IP. He quickly became a key member of the Astros' 2017 World Series championship team. 2/6

Small sample sizes in baseball statistics are usually misleading, so 20 games in to the 2022 season (12.3% of the season) is a good starting point to see how things are going for the Astros. 1/12 The Astros have been up and down so far this season, winning 4 of their first 5 games and then going 7-8 in their next 15. The club is tied for 2nd in the AL West behind the resurgent Angels (14-7), who have won 8 of their last 10. 2/12

A doctor friend passed along the following observations on the immunology of COVID from a Grand Rounds talk today of Dr. Gailen Marshall, head of immunology at the Univ of Miss Medical School. Talk arranged thru the Kirkendall Endowed Lecture Series at UT-Houston Med School. 1/8 Vaccination appears to produce the same level of antibody response as active infection of COVID does. The brand of vaccine does not appear to make a big difference. 2/8
