The 9/11 story that I cannot forget belongs to Rick Rescorla

his life is book-ended by two moments of American bravery - going above and beyond in answering the call of duty

finally giving his life so that others would live

(1 of 16) born in Cornwall, Rick is a natural soldier & born leader - he joins the British Army in 1956 & serves in Cyprus and Rhodesia as a paratrooper & MP fighting commies

encouraged by a friend, he chooses to immigrate to the US out of a sheer desire to destroy communism

Quick note about what it's like to be on the receiving end of "thank you for your service"

(1/10) since coming home from Iraq, I have been welcomed with warmth, kindness, and appreciation from everyone I've interacted with about my time in uniform -

I will always be grateful for these gestures, big & small

hey folks - I did a spot on Josh's pod this week on the intersection of the election & potential tax changes with @lopezlinette & @michaelbatnick -

check it out here

some follow-ups next

( 1 of 15 ) to set the stage, here's the @TaxFoundation analysis of the Biden tax proposal

although as I point out on the interview, the US House & Senate control tax policy - not the White House

and it takes two parties (well, 60 Senate votes) to dance

BG John Buford - 1st Division Cavalry commander - was the first to recognize the importance of key terrain at Gettysburg

his actions on July 1st, 1863 may well have turned the course of battle if not history, & perhaps saved the Union itself

(1 of 16) in great contrast to the Confederate cavalry in mid-1863, the horse soldiers under Buford's command were ordered to keep ahead of I Corps and "locate Lee's army and discern its intentions."

the primary role of reconnaissance: be the eyes & ears of the commander in the field

It's a smart guy/gal think to observe that income tax refunds are a "tax-free loan to the government," and while true, I feel this understates the importance of tax refunds to the American family & the effect they have on consumer behavior

(1/x) Per Chase (via @ritholtz), roughly 80% of US households receive a tax refund, at an average of $3,600 ($2,600 median) - this represents about six weeks of average earnings

it's time once again to bust out some @RitholtzWealth wisdom & info about markets at all-time highs

as you might imagine, we have some thoughts

(1 of 2,354) Ben @awealthofcs in 2017:

all-time highs are usually followed by... more all-time highs:

"Generally speaking, stocks go up most of the time. A few of those highs will be temporary peaks but most will simply lead to even more highs down the road."
