With so much of my feed blowing up about how impressive it is that Faker is heading to yet another Worlds Final, I want to share with the world outside Magic twitter how @kaibudde’s run this weekend is just as incredible, if not more so.

Kai was one of the most dominant players in competitive Magic in its heyday. He won the World Championship title in 1999 as a relative unknown. But he was far from done.

We said goodbye to Shiro yesterday. I knew it was almost time on Saturday morning, so I set out to give him the best day we could. We took him on a stroll up in the hills, down to the beach, and to two of his favorite parks. He spent his day surrounded by nature and love. I knew this was coming, but that didn’t make it any easier. I’ve cried more in the last week than I have in a long, long time. He was my little buddy who had been my constant companion for the last ten of his almost sixteen years. But we can never have enough time with them.

So I haven’t been involved in competitive Magic for years now, but I felt compelled to comment on this, since it was such a big part of my life for so long. I am frankly not surprised to see the MPL being dissolved –

While it was an exciting idea when it was announced, the fact that its existence meant cutting back massively on other organized play hurt interest in competitive Magic overall, and the league itself was implemented and produced so poorly that it was doomed to fail from the start
