100 years ago tonight, in the small town where we live, thousands of klan members came to march through the Irish catholic neighborhood. To get there they had to funnel over this bridge. When they got there it had been blocked by a truck. Which should have been a warning. Image They came from a huge Klan rally on a local rich guy's farm. There's a minigolf place there now bearing the family name. The march had been opposed in town but Carnegie lacked an ordinance stating that you needed permission to march. And the police chief was (surprise!) Klan. Image

if the sun is just about to rise wherever you are and you have a clear view of eastern skies you can see every planet in the solar system right now all in a row. although a few of them are pretty faint. but just saying: it's out there right now. I never sleep in much in June but hey at least you get to see every planet at once aside from saturn and uranus who got lost in the dawn.

We drove up to Potter County, a remote region with the darkest skies in Pennsylvania, to look at stars. Down the road from where we were staying is a tiny town called Austin, notable for a disaster that happened there in 1911. Although tbh "happened" is far too passive a term. Austin was a small settlement in a valley between the heavily wooded hills, and it grew into a bustling town during the logging boom the region was undergoing during the late 19th century. It was also prone to an absurd number of complete disasters. A short list:

In our worker co-op if I suddenly do some fucked up shit the other folks can get together and figure out what to do about it, and we have procedures in place for that, including booting me out. They still own the project, they still have access to the bank account, etc One of the big reasons we wanted to do this is because we'd all experienced how standard workplace structures or even looser teams lend themselves to abuse and exploitation and cultures of silence and excuses etc. Like straight up that was and is a huge motivator.

These little fluff things especially when they pop up when cops are under scrutiny are always kinda silly, as if the primary complaints about cops are that they give out an insufficient amount of toy gifts for the village children like really low quality elves. I mean it would be great if the role of cops was just to give out toys, sponsor little league teams, buy ice cream for people, and do TikTok meme dances but instead theres just a lot of murder and violence and sexual assault.
