NEW: Gonna thread some thoughts and reaction to our final @latimes/@BerkeleyIGS poll, which finds Bass holding an edge against @RickCarusoLA, 45% to 41% among likely voters, w/13% saying they remain undecided. The poll surveyed people from Oct. 25-31. latimes.com/politics/story… A key point, which Bass wiseman @douglasjherman makes below, is that support for the longtime elected official, has not significantly declined. She maintains strong backing among key groups of voters including women, liberals and registered Democrats.

No one was more influential on @RickCarusoLA's life than his parents. His dad was once SoCal's most famous car dealer. Then he went to jail + lost his fortune only to rebuild it. @MattHjourno and I probe how this impacted Caruso's life and run for mayor
latimes.com/california/sto… For Caruso, running for mayor meant reckoning with his late father’s opposition, rooted partly in the fear that his own past would be weaponized against his son. Over the years, Caruso came to believe his father wanted to shield him. latimes.com/california/sto… Image

NEW: @KarenBassLA + @RickCarusoLA are most closely associated with other parts of Los Angeles, yet each has deep personal or professional ties to the San Fernando Valley. It's likely the area of the city where the mayor's race will be won or lost. latimes.com/california/sto… Both have invested in turning out the vote in the Valley. But when canvassers and the candidates themselves press the flesh in there, they encounter an electorate whose leanings don’t always line up with common perceptions. latimes.com/california/sto…

So, @LATDoug and I spent the summer going deep on @RickCarusoLA + @KarenBassLA's respective homelessness plans. We spent hours speaking w/the candidates and their teams. The result is the most comprehensive look at how they would address this crisis. latimes.com/homeless-housi… Caruso is firmly focused on construction of new interim housing, laying out an enormously expensive plan to build temp. housing units. Bass wants to wring as much as possible out of the current system in order to expand both interim and permanent housing.

We're live from a virtual LA City Council hearing, where the elected are going to continuing discussing a proposal to allow the removal of homeless encampments — if shelter is first offered. latimes.com/homeless-housi… You'll recall that they backed off passing a measure like this last month --which had been rushed to the council-- after a vocal backlash from activists. latimes.com/homeless-housi…

Let me get on my soapbox for minute. If the government shutdown had lasted much longer, Americans receiving federal rental subsidies were about to be in a ton of trouble. latimes.com/local/lanow/la… 130,000 households in Los Angeles County receive some form of federal rental assistance and were at risk of not being able to pay their rent if the shutdown had lasted through the end of February. latimes.com/local/lanow/la…

Several months ago, @GenaroMolina47 and I were thinking about different ways we might cover homelessness in Los Angeles in a different way. Was there some new angle we could find to bring the subject alive for readers? Was there new ground we could cover? We resolved that we would find some of the craziest, most ingenious ways that homeless people live in Los Angeles County today. So we both contacted outreach workers and spent lots of time walking the streets looking for the hidden crannies in our community where people live.

The only thing Adam loved more than his family and politics was baseball. He took me to one of my first games--an exhibition game at RFK Stadium btw the Expos and Cardinals (his fav team). He was a huge proponent of DC getting a team. Here's another story Adam once told me which appears in the book, "The Numbers Game: Baseball's Lifelong Fascination with Statistics." Adam claimed credit for the NYT using OPS in their weekly "By the Numbers" box in the print edition. books.google.com/books?id=UbTbu…

Been thinking about this paragraph a lot from @MarkLeibovich's great piece about Paul Ryan. nytimes.com/2018/08/07/mag… This sentiment always brings me back to a John Boehner interview on @MeetThePress in 2011 where he's asked about Trump's birtherism stuff.

David Gregory asks: "Do you not think it’s your responsibility to stand up to that kind of ignorance?"

Boehner says this:

So I want to introduce you to a couple I've spent a lot of time with over the last few months. Lawrence and Carla McCue have been married for almost 31 years and live in their car with their dog Oreo.
latimes.com/local/la-me-ln… For years they lived in their busted up Jeep out by LAX where Carla worked at one of the hotels. Each morning, she'd wake up, walk Oreo, get her husband set up and then head off to work. Lawrence would spend the day reading scripture and listening to music.

Outside of @RepMaxineWaters, a group of people who had come to protest the @Oathkeepers are chanting “Fuck the government. America was never great.” They surrounded this car, which had a flag on the back. They pulled it off, found some lighter fluid and set it on fire.
