There is almost this quixotic notion that electoral politics can easily root out corruption without changing the systems behind the scenes. Once people get into office, everything they do is based on a need to stay in power, or abide by that very system. 🧵 Every 10 years, we see in local politics a new wave of politically connected folks glide into office, claiming an interest in "reforming the party" or being an alternative. If that person wasn't attacked at every step, chances are they were never seen as a threat to the system.

Today the Senate is debating the Voting Rights legislation, which is destined to fail. 🧵:It's been almost a week since election day, and I feel it's important to reflect on the defeat of ballot proposal #1, #3 and #4 last week. It will have a significant negative impact on building democracy in NY state, and reflects a concerning state of Democratic politics. Last Tuesday I was at the @JumaaneWilliams @bradlander @ShahanaFromBK @ReynosoBrooklyn party, after having just canvassed, trying to feel good about the future, but also had my head in my hands reflecting we were going to lose important chances to improve elections in NY.
