I like how the men are stuck in the "Our mothers & grandmothers did this, they were like that & they were happy" mode.
As girls growing up they put us under immense pressure to get an education & a payslip. You really think it was because they liked their situation? Shuwa shuwa?
One thing about growing up is the women open up to you. You're shocked to discover she was relieved when her husband died because he was so mean & abusive but she couldn't leave. She asks where she would go with her 10 children, no meaningful income & the clan depended on her?
