My thought on the web3 discussion: there is absolutely something interesting with a lot of positive potential there, but if you buy into a bunch of Techno Utopian ideology that blinds you to the fact that power dynamics exist everywhere, you’re simply repeating past mistakes. The whole web3 thing is fascinating to watch because you can see the early stages of a well-worn cycle repeating itself. People are desperately looking for something to believe in in the post-Facebook tech industry, and elevating an interesting new technology to messianic status.

Things just went from very bad to much worse. Obviously we already know what to expect now. washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/…

Well on our way to becoming a Russia-style oligarchy. No one has their fingers on the pulse of dance crazed Zoomers like...enterprise software giant Oracle?

Finally caved and bought a mechanical keyboard. This community is nuts! I had no idea how far down the rabbit hole went. I don’t even want to discuss which keyboard I bought because I know I already screwed up.

Spent the afternoon listening to a federal court hearing about Apple and Epic games while working, and it's pretty fascinating to be able to just tune into something like this. My favorite part: at one point the judge shut one of the lawyers down with "I control the mute button!"

I feel like Raspberry Pi has really become my gateway drug to the non-platform world. If it was maybe like 20% more accessible to average people, we might really have something here.

We’re now in a situation in the US where the peaceful transition of executive power must be wargamed. nytimes.com/2020/08/11/opi… Just in case you had any doubts about the stakes of this election.

For quite awhile now, one of my favorite documentaries has been Hearts of Darkness, about the torturous production of Apocalypse Now. imdb.com/title/tt010201… Last night, I think I may finally have seen an even crazier documentary about an ill-fated film involving Brando: Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau. imdb.com/title/tt396654…

I’m not normally one to blow brands up on social media—it’s a gross look, and I’d usually rather just deal with it and move on. But today @Caviar support really pissed me off. A bit stunned to be treated like I’m some sort of fraudster because I reported an undelivered order. ImageImage Guessing this sort of thing is probably a growing problem for them, so I understand. Still angry.

Can't wait for this to kick off so many dumb VC takes about the future of programming. OK, here's the pitch: Dreamweaver...but you can talk to it.

I think what annoys me so much about even the relatively sane tech people’s response to the current round of “journalism vs tech” is the tendency act like this is just some petty squabble between two even remotely equivalent sides with similar levels of self-interest and power. I am concerned that the level of childish vitriol coming from powerful tech people right now suggests Peter Thiel vs Gawker was only the tip of a very troubling iceberg.

While I’m logging on, another thing I wanted to mention is that I recently learned that Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September,” the Friends theme, and the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance” were all written by the same genius: Alee Willis. She died last December. stereogum.com/2068547/allee-… I’ve been reading @RidT’s book “Active Measures,” and he has an interesting section about the Neutron Bomb, which the Soviets considered the ultimate capitalist weapon: it destroyed only “people, not property.” bookshop.org/books/active-m… ImageImageImageImage

I would really love to know the numbers on PTSD diagnoses in tech. The industry is absolutely rife with trauma. businessinsider.com/pinterest-empl… ImageImage I can tell you that my own therapist thinks I show signs of PTSD based on a series of past job experiences, and it’s increasingly clear to me that I am not alone.

Look forward to reading in Vanity Fair about a month from now about how Trump staged that photo op because he was furious about being called a coward for hiding in his bunker. “Furious, Trump lashed out at advisors. ‘You’ve got to hit back!’ Kushner urged. Barr was the first to float the idea of using the 1807 Insurrection Act as legal cover for a massive domestic military response.”

Last night I watched Sullivan’s Travels, which may well be the most woke movie of the 1940s. It’s also the origin of the title “Oh Brother Where Art Thou?” In the film, it’s the title of a book the cluelessly privileged director protagonist wants to adapt into a film. Image The kicker in this film is that the protagonist, a pretentious Hollywood liberal, slums with the poor for research until he is actually incarcerated in a case of mistaken identity and has no way back to his former life.
