The story of a long forgotten Anthrax attack on (and with) UK soil. A thread. Image It's 1981. That year 'Tainted Love' was playing on every radio station. You could not avoid it.

I've got stuff to do. So obviously you are getting a thread on 19th and early 20th century biological weapon scifi this evening. Most of these books are well over 100 years old. And yet, I still feel the need to say....

Ah. We seem to be at the thread of threads stage of my ever prosaic

' read all books on every state chemical and biological weapon programme and tweet them ($your advert here$ )' project™.

Below a thread for each state. Image First out the gate. Russia/ Soviet Union

A bit of a slowdown on the Poisons and Pestilence Podcast front, because, well, life. But much to look forward to! I have recorded an interview with the wonderful @bermicourt dealing with his experiences of British Army Chemical and Biological defence preperations in the advent of Operation Granby (Gulf War).

Podpickers. I am still wandering around the 15th century Americas. But in a few episodes time I plan to start the WW1 season. I need your help. First of all. If there are any experts who want to contribute to the show do get in touch - in terms or reading suggestions or contributing to an episode.

‘Despite Putin’s nuclear bluster, the use of biological weapons in Ukraine is much more likely’ telegraph.co.uk/global-health/… What I find odd about this article is the short shrift given Riot control/incapacitants. Which feels a little odd, considering the type of policing /crowd control equipment which has been turning up in abandoned trucks.

With the planned protests in Russia today, the Kremlin waffle factory will be on it's highest setting - expecting Russian diplomatic accounts to be pushing many strange accusations about CBRN. I was going to put together a bingo card. But can't face it.

You will likely see wierd claims about offensive 'bio-labs' coming out of Moscow affiliated accounts.

It's nonsense written largely for domestic audiences - cribbed from RU propaganda playbook.

Will try and collate responses etc periodically over coming days below.

Many places I could have started the US leg of the

'read every substantive book on CBW programmes - state by state super-snazzy-named read through challenge'

But I am starting here. If you avoided my threads on the Soviet Union and UK so far - well played, and bad luck. Image In another anecdote, a radioactive isotope and detector were borrowed from a lab, by an industrious scientist- who wanted to prove his landlady was recycling table scraps....

So. Figured after completing my (pedestrian) commentary of the literature on the Soviet programme- I would come back to blighty. Happy to take suggestions on where to start on the UK chemical and biological programmes, failing that, first up will be what I find on my shelf. Its worth noting that this support for research included support for research into 'less lethal' incapacitant agents. There a range of arguments provided for this change in direction. Not least the apparent programmes of adversaries.

I have been really enjoying this book. A key take-home for me is that the existence of even a small biowarfare programme anywhere at a given point in history - leaves the door wide open for future programmes. Image After finishing this IOU one 'places not to go on holiday' thread on former USSR biological weapon production and testing sites. First on the list: Image

Russia denies that a single chemical weapon attack has been carried out by the Syrian government. This position in maintained despite a vast body of evidence which has been presented to the contrary by civil-society groups, western governments and in OPCW investigations.

A brief thread on Moscow spin today on #Skripal case- which involved an attempt to bring independent OPCW lab findings into question At a press briefing earlier today- which was live translated in the UK ( so quite patchy). Lavrov mentioned BZ- and it was claimed this had been found by a Swiss Defence Lab, an accredited OPCW lab.
